not sure if you guys saw this Brooks article about JD's plan to reshape Hartford, good stuff

I dont think anything illustrated things were (frank)ed up in Hartford more than Hajek being awful all year up there, we are all like what they hell is wrong with this guy, and then he comes here and he looks fantastic

I feel confident that he's the right man for the job. I have faith in him.

He's certainly saying all the right things so far, and I like the development coaches.
"“You need a mix there, too. It can’t all be kids. It’s vital to have veterans who are there for more than the money, but set examples and take leadership roles."
I'm sure that applies to the main club as well, so I think Kreider stays.

I also think that's why Staal will be so involved. From what I've read, he's nothing but a class act and great teammate. I don't mind Staal as much as others, so I'm happy he's still around.

I dont mind him, but the sooner they get rid of all the defensemen 30 and over the better

this game is only getting faster and the 3 "s" boys all look like they are in slow motion sometimes

I think Shatty also stays, possibly due to JD's Blues connection.

I think he has the best chance of being traded because I could actually see another team wanting him if the Rangers picked up some of the cap hit

Yup, agree 100%. If I had to rank them based on who I want out first, it would go: Smith
Shatty
Staal

Possibly at the TDL if we kept some fishnagels, otherwise I think he stays.

The Athletic had an article yesterday about 25 buyout candidates and listed Smith as a
"credible candidate" at #11, for whatever that's worth

https://theathletic.com/1...mifications-of-moving-on/

11. Brendan Smith, New York Rangers

The Rangers have three high-priced defencemen considered for this list, but given that the savings are pretty similar regardless of which of Smith, Marc Staal or Kevin Shattenkirk we look at it’s hard to rank anyone higher than Smith, who carved out a role in New York late last season as a utility defenceman/winger.

New York has a bunch of money to play with and is still on a rebuild track so in a lot of ways it makes sense to let old deals expire on their own, but if the Rangers decide they need to free up some money for big game hunting Smith is the obvious choice.

I look at it this way

Staal would be 1st because he is supposed to be a shutdown guy. He really isn't a point producer at all. The game is really starting to pass him by. He is probably a great guy and a leader on the team, but you can't pay his salary for that.

Shatty can still be a good point producer so he has value. I still think he has a bounce back year this year.

Smith when put on the 4th line was actually really good. Hopefully some of that gives him some confidence back on defense. He is the most versatile of the three.

That makes no sense. So we buy out the guy who is the most versatile?

Don't shoot the messenger

I guess Smith is the most versatile, but I also think he's probably the least talented of the three. The short write-up does pretty much say that the three of the are somewhat interchangeable though.

I think Smith is the most likely buyout cadidate simply because his buyout cap hit this coming season is 970K

next year's jumps yes, but Girardi's goes down a lot

if they wanna go nuts July 1st, they could very well buy Smith out if they get no feelers for a trade at draft

ultimately the guy's in the damn way, I dont care how versatile he is

No way you could convince me that Staal shouldn't go 1st. He is also blocking someone.

oh yeah, for sure

but his cap hit this coming year would be 2.9 mil, Smith only 970K

that's only reason I give Smith

hell get rid of all of 'em

A 4 million dollar 4th line LW/3rd D pairing guy isn't valuable.
