I'm not following your logic here. How can you get to 4 without giving up 7?
You're saying you think Nylander and 31 are enough to get 4th overall? I don't think so.
Have you seen in-draft trades in recent years? I'm sure someone can help me here without me going to do research (really should be working!)...
NYR gave up what, 26 and a 2nd rounder to move to 22 and get Miller? And that's in the bottom half of the round. If you want to move into the very top of the draft, it's gonna cost you... - Tonybere
my point is, 7,31 and Nylander is gross overpayment to move up 3 spots...offer 31 and Nylander, they say no, then you stay at 7 and move on.

I don't understand the point of this tweet? Seems like something you should post after Finland won, not two weeks later

31st OA and Nylander for 4th overall is ludacris.
I would say the trade is a bit tilted in Avs favour, but could happen. I dont know how ready that Turcotte kid is, but i would think that any trade the Sabres want to do is for a player who can make an impact right away. They really need to be competitive next year.

As GM for the Sabres, call me what you will, fair game.
My logic was and remains
Alex Turcotte >>>> 7 & 30 (31 if Blue win the SC). Various pronasticators have Turcotte as 3rd best player, in fact an actual NHL Scout described his Skill-set as a cross between Sidney Crosby and Brad Marchand...not bad. He has a complete 200' game, plays with grit, is a terrific skater, and a gamer with fierce compete level. The Sabres are sorely lacking in most of those attributes. While projected to be a true #1 Center, on the Sabres if he can unseat Jack Eichel there, TERRIFIC, if not he is a 1B to a 1A. While other Centers are strong in some categories (loved Cozens), I felt no other had the whole package.
As a aide, my intelligence with other GMs suggested the next 2 Centers desired would not be available...maybe a smoke screen, not sure until selections are made. In that scenario, I did not want to chance getting the 4th best Center at our highest position of need.
Is 7 + 30 an overpayment, yes I recognize that..hence why a current, young 3C was added in exchange for a prospect 3 years into his professional development. 1 in the hand vs 2 in the Bush concept in 0lay here for sure. Could Nylander suddenly turn into a top 6 player...maybe, but being close and watching his development for 3 years slow down, it has reduced my confidence in the probability. His value, to me after being selected in that 1st round has diminished shed significantly.
Brassard is a sweetener, if not signed, oh well...from our vantage point a 2nd in 2020 allows us to further buildout the future pipeline.
I continue to like the deal. Our guy in Turcotte was not going to be available, and highly doubtful Cozens would be either.

You conveniently forgot JT Compher and Brassard/2020 2nd as a factor. JT was selected at 31 by the Sabres several years ago and is playing in the NHL...not a prospect who could be.

I don't necessarily disagree that it's an overpayment, but I don't think it is nearly as off-balance as Nylander and 31 for 7OA. That offer would get you hung up on. I'd imagine your 1st round pick has to be part of that trade. So, maybe a lesser prospect gets it done, idk.

I may have lied to you accidentally on purpose
But I just came up with my decision towards the end
If I were Colorado, I would value Compher more than Nylander, but some people like potential. The conditional pick is easy to say "(frank) Brassard; gimme the pick". The cost to move up in that case is the difference in perceived value between Nylander and Compher (clearly the Colorado GM covets him) and trading down ~10-15 spots in quality between 30/31 and the 2020 2nd.
Well constructed trade! The reasoning is sound even if I disagree on a portion.

I like the trade, Nylander could be a bust and I like Compher.
I was planning going to go one per day for the lottery and two per day for the non-lottery picks. We have 10 days left until the draft; based on that timeframe, I may go two per day for all, maybe more. Taking a look now. - airjan23

I agree that his development has been slow and that he could develop into a fine top 6 forward, however I am still concerned with how the contract negotiations and holdout his brother had with the Leafs went down. Is he going to be a problem down the road too? If a team values him in the trade then you take it.
Turcotte, to me, is by far the best player in the draft behind the top 2. I actually voted that the trade was unfair for the Avs. However, if they want someone like Caufield and feel he'll be there at 7, then good for them.

If Hughes falls to 2, trade it to MTL for Domi 15 2020 1st
