Actually wouldn’t mind the Gardiner signing, I think his defensive liabilities are overblown a bit, before last year he wasn’t really getting much heat for his defense, it wasn’t too long ago you could say he was a very good defenseman, I think his partner Nikita whatever his name is had some part in his lapses....I think it’ll be an upgrade over gus, and then trade gus while his value is where it is.....those are the smart moves Stan should be making, get Gardiner for cash and upgrade at another position with a valuable asset that’s at its peak - rwilliams88
Have you actually watched Gardiner play? Because if you have, you would know Nikita Zaitsev was partnered with Jake Muzzin.
Lets just say Gardiner is an offensive defenceman who moves the puck fairly well but commits almost as many bonehead turnovers as Gustafsson. Behind his own blueline he is extremely weak and he also has a wonky back. Teams like St.Louis or San Jose or Dallas or Winnipeg would pound him into mincemeat in a playoff series.
Stan wont be signing him and if he does he will eventually be fired over it. |

What a terrible idea. I'd rather the Hawks re-sign Gustafsson and I'd really prefer they didn't do that either. - EbonyRaptor
The Hawks would be better off signing Nemeth or Edler, and even better off trading for Murray.
Hell, Luke Schenn would be a better signing than Gardiner. |

Actually Nikita was with everyone including Reilly for a while, but from what I saw when Nikita and Gardiner were paired, it hurt Gardiner....obviously your basing the bonehead plays he made against Boston in the playoffs....I watch some maple leafs.....and this might of been his shakiest year but also was a +19.....obviously u don’t watch much of him if you are comparing him and Gus defensively

I agree.
Unfortunately, there has been a lot of smoke to Gardiner signing in Chicago.
If he ends up here, expect Gusafsson to be moved. |

Yep. The Hawks need more of a defensive minded defender.
Gardiner doesn't fit. |

I'm good with that, in the sense that a lot of smoke usually means it isn't happening. Most of Stan's moves have been of the variety where there wasn't a lot of buzz around.
I hope the Hawks use money to plug some bottom 6 holes at fwd and would be surprised if they go spending like drunken sailors when FA opens.
If there's a trade to be made to bolster the defense, great, but I also see Joker claiming one of the top 4 spots on D. |

I hope you're right, I don't want to see Gardiner on the Hawks.
I think HJ will earn a spot and I bet Bowman is banking on it. I am curious what Bowman will do? Without the pressure of being in cap trouble and at the same time trying to win inside the "window" he has made some good moves to great moves, the Manning signing aside. Like you I expect on July 1 the Hawks will pick up some second Tier UFA to help bolster the bottom six or the defense or perhaps both areas. I also expect to see ADB and Strome get re-signed. |

IIRC - Panarin’s playoff stats with the Hawks wasn't that great, however, he did seem to play better with CBJ this year. Kessel is a good example, while he’s not a road-grader, 200ft player - there’s no denying that he doesn’t wilt come playoff time. - Chief4Feathers
Panarin had 7 pts in 7 games against the Blues and the entire team was awful against the Predators. |

My exact thoughts.
I'm more open to signing Gustafsson if he - for whatever reason - takes a lesser deal than expected.
Gardiner... I'm out on. I'd rather sign Edler or acquire someone in a trade. |

Would a guy like JT MIller help the Hawks or is this no different than having Saad on the roster? |

Is this a hunch that Stan wants to sign him or chatter that Gardiner wants to play for Chicago? Gardiner and Gus are very similar players. Rather keep Gus and use that redonkulous money Gardiner will ask for and sign some solid 2 way depth guys. |

Can you imagine if Gus and Gardiner were out on a shift at the same time? A 10 year old house league player would have a clear path to the net. |

With the Hawks having a growing stable of young D-man prospects...and with gardiner likely wanting $$$ (6+million) and term (6-7 years)....I am hoping sane minds prevail and they stay away from Gardnier.
He does NOTHING to aid our defensive weakensses, and actually adds to them.
Also, it takes up valuable CAP space that we can use to add to forward depth, or throw at a more defensive minded Top 4 D-man.
No, really, really hope Hawks stay FAR away from Gardiner!!!!! |

The 7 pts against the Blues...IIRC 5 of those were assists and one of his goals was an EN. He wasn't bad vs the Blues, but if memory serves, none of our scorers were really scoring in that series except for Hossa.
The whole team was bad vs the Preds, but Panarin was particularly bad. He routinely drew two players every time he entered the zone and wasn't able to fight through checks to even get a sniff below the circles.
He had a decent series vs the Caps for three games and then they doubled coverage on him and he not surprisingly disappeared. I've read on here he may have been injured as well.
He had a decent series vs the TBL. He's scored enough in the regular season to get $10M this offseason.
If there were no Cap sure...but there is so, no thanks. |

Hopefully it’s cold water being poured on the fire that’s causing the smoke!

I just don't see it, not after reading this recent interview. Gardiner in no way resembles the type of player Stan is talking about acquiring/developing.

I'd love to have Panarin back, but am actually against signing him due to the cost. You mention against the Preds and Caps that they had to put double coverage on him to take him out. I think most players can be taken out of the game if the opposition doubles him, then it's up to his linemates to use the open ice and make them pay. The fact that they double him, or put their best defenders on him, shows how valuable he is. The problem is that his linemates and the other lines didn't step up and do their part. |
