So what say you folks, happy because Marchand cried, or sad because the Leafs are the #1 losers in the league with longest cup drought? - TheMussel
Happy marchand cried.
Leafs have been losers for decades, we should all be used to it by now. |

So in the main article Kadri might go to the Flyers because they need grit and were one of the teams that took few penalties and were too easy to play against last season. Hmmmm.... |

So how much would a team pay Marleau and be ok with it?
Here's how I look at it. If he stays then Brown's 2.1 gets tossed out and replaced by a guy making $900k so the Leafs would be paying 6.25 + .900k for those two slots (I said slots).
If Marleau goes then Brown slides into the top nine and is replaced on the 4th line by the guy making $900k.
So scenario one is $7.15 milly for those two slots. Scenario two is 3 milly for those two slots plus whatever portion of Marleau's contract they had to swallow.
So, is Marleau attractive at 4 milly on a 1 year deal to say SJ? If so the Leafs eat 2.25 milly and just saved almost 2 million in cap space. - The Law
If I am San Jose, I don't touch Marleau with a ten foot pole.
'member how the Toronto media was speculating that Babs wouldn't bench Marleau next year because: a) he needs to keep the ironman streak alive; and b) he's gunning for the all-time games played record?
Now triple that pressure for the poor bastard San Jose coach.
If Marleau sucks next year (and by "if" I mean "when"), it's going to be very tough to put him in the press box.
San Jose knows this. They won't touch him. |

why would the Leafs do this? This makes no sense at all. It doesn't help them cap wise at all. |

Zaitsev would actually be alright on the Oilers I think. He'd be a good fit there, and help them a lot.
but it be like Zaitsev and a 3rd round pick for a 7th round pick. |

Main article also says Nylander/Marleau package to LA. If Dubas somehow gets Doughty out of LA he would be back on my hot list. But I Doughty it. |

Phanouf, a 1st in 2020 and a decent prospect, LA keeps 2M, Leafs have a cap hit for him of 3.25M for 2 years |

I don't see him waiving number one. And he is getting older, slower, and worse ny the minute. He's also another lefty. I have doubts. |

Demers 3,937,500 + Grabner 3,350,000 = Cap hit of 7,287,500.
Marleau 6.25M + Brown 2.1M = Cap hit of 8.35M
Seems like we would save some money.

If Dubas can move Marleau without taking back salary or retaining any portion of the cap hit, I don't care what we get for him.. I like Marleau a lot but we need the cap space to overpay for Mitch "Grew Up a Leafs fan" Marner. |

Marleau with a young player like Brown, and maybe a mid round pick.
It's not as hard as you think, especially with so little actual salary remaining.
Steve Mason, salary over $4M, traded with a 3rd round pick, 7th, and a meh young player similar to Brown, for basically nothing. that's the closest comparable I can find.
So, Marleau, Conner Brown, a 2nd and 4th, for a 7th round pick? or AHL lifer?

I'm just surprised Marleau would be okay playing for nothing instead of a cup team. As a hockey guy I'm very very surprised by this. |

Well, not everyone wants to play where they know they're not really of use, and more of a problem.
Many really want to just hang up the skates at that point. Some actually enjoy the mentor role. who knows.
I dont know where he ends up, but it also wouldn't surprise me one little bit if he gets traded somewhere, then ends up as a deadline deal to a playoff team (which would end up costing them peanuts on the cap). |

It's not a good deal . . .but I don't think they get rid of Marleau in any trade that has fans going, "Wow! What a deal!".
If you're trading away Marleau, you're taking back someone who is overpaid, and you're likely not saving that much off of your cap.
The max you can eat on a cap is 50%. Is Marleau a $3.2m dollar player to some team? Still probably not. So retaining his salary you're still sweetening the pot, and ideally taking back nothing but a pick in return. That would mean that you're replacing Marleau with a Marlie, and saving about $2m in cap. That's sort of your best case scenario.
In Pat's proposal, you're dealing away Marleau, and bringing back an RHD who isn't great and is overpaid, but isn't THAT overpaid. If you can leave the Brown/Grabner out, there's a $2m in savings, but I still think you have to sweeten it a bit. Brown has a $500k bonus and Marleau has a 1.5m bonus that is paid on July 1.
That means strictly in terms of cash, Grabner makes $7.5m and Demers would be $6.2m or $13.7m in cash total vs. $5.3m in cash paid out to Marleau and Brown. It makes sense to Arizona financially.
Demers could replace Zaitsev - afterall I doubt he can make a good outlet pass either - and then you're done with him after next year.

Parts of this make sense, but I think it would end up more like Marleau and Brown/2nd round pick, for Demers with retention, after July 1.
(I can never remember if they can retain Salary, but not cap. I don't think you can, I think it's 50%, and that would mean they keep $1.8M salary, but over $2M in cap.
I'm not sure if Hossa's contract is insured or not, but if not, I can see that opening up a world of possibility with Arizona.

It'd be nice to have actual serviceable players. Did Grabner come back at the end of the year? That eye injury was pretty nasty, there has been a few guys that haven't been able to come back from that kind of injury. Of course sending him to robidas island wouldnt be the worst thing either |

I like this idea... gets both Zaitsev and Larsson "fresh starts"...
consider broadening the deal
Zaitsev, Brown and Johnsson
Larsson, Kassian/Khaira + Puljujarvi
Edmonton gets more offensive wings that can skate
Leafs get a defense refresh and a project, along with a little grit
