I agree with you, I don't know for fact, but I stated earlier about how IMO the circumstances certainly back a case to be made about Jason's hands being tied...and he had to make a deal before the Bonus was payable on July 1st ... Army called Jason's bluff and forced a sub-market-value trade (no Thomas, no Kyrou, take cap dumps to offset the Bonus)
Interestingly enough, from an article on The Athletic about the trade...
“We were hoping to get it done at the draft,” Armstrong said amidst the on-ice Cup celebration. “The draft is an area where you have assets. We had a first-round pick. We weren’t able to get anything done there. We tried during the talking period but still couldn’t get a deal done. So we went out (July 1) and solidified our forward position getting (Tyler) Bozak and (David) Perron.”
And that might have been it, but Botterill called again later on July 1. Finally, the pieces fit together.
His hand was forced by The Pegula's deadline around the July 1st Bonus Date.

Maybe ror flat out asked for a trade or
The pegulas didn't like his "lost his love" comments. They found it offensive to pay him 7.5 million. They didnt want to pay someone they deemed a quitter, one more penny.
He hurt their brand by his comments. Paying some f*cko top $ to tell fans he labored to play a sport for big $.
Doesn't matter how rich you are, it's still business.
And possibly personal distaste for a guy they treated very fair.

If they had good, legit offers based on them paying the bonus I hope they were at least considered.

It's four o'clock on a Thursday
The regular crowd chiming in
There's a commenter typing next to me
Crying over ROR's bearded chin
He says, "Son, can you play me some highlights
Which ones? I'm not sure that I know
But they're sad and they're sweet and I knew them complete
When ROR wore the blue and the gold"
La la la, di da da
La la, di da da da dum

...too much time on my hands,
I got ROR on my mind.
Can't ease this pain so easily!.....
...and it makes me wanna cry,
and throw my hands up to the sky.
So-oh, understand,
don't waste your time always searching for those
Wasted Years.
It kind of sucks (and is more difficult as the fruitless years continue to add up) when you have to keep resetting the patience meter with every gm and/or head coach's hiring (and firing)... but what else can you do? Can't blame the guy who has been there for two years for the previous ten. GMTM's impatience seems to be one of the main causes of Buffalo's woes, it's gonna take time to now build it the right way.
Not saying there couldn't have been a better return for ROR, but speaking as a Panthers fan, if someone doesn't want to be in your city/on your team it's best to just get them gone. "We're going to do what it takes to build a winner here, if you don't want to play here let me know now....I'll do my best to accommodate you, because I don't want you here if your heart is not in it."
You will never build a "winning culture" with a bunch of, albeit talented, mopey asses who'd rather be someplace else.
