I expect the Panthers will either trade (with retained salary) or buy out James Reimer in the coming weeks. Hasn't worked out in Florida and Panthers are pursuing Bobrovsky. Reimer would be good fit as a second goalie to complement a newer starter, perhaps somewhere like Calgary. |

I have not looked at their numbers, won't that make their cap situation like borderline impossible in a couple years? What about now? |

They have 8F and 5D under contract for next year. That'd give them 9F and 5D. Not impossible but they'd have little to no breathing room in the foreseeable future, without shipping out more salary. They could offload Hoffman for about $5M in the very short-term, but that doesn't help them going forward. |

Be better for Columbus - mdw7413
I wouldn't be surprised if they included Hoffman with Reimer with some salary retained to make it more feasible.
I'd give them something like Mayfield, a lower level prospect and a 2nd for Hoffman and Reimer with like ~40% retained. Clears $7+M off their books and the Isles can bury Reimer in the AHL or have him backup Greiss if Lehner doesn't re-sign plus they get a year of Hoffman. |

With E. Karlsson rumors out there of a long term deal ($10M+ annually) possibly being worked out to remain in S.J., the Sharks will likely become very active in part in the trade market, due to currently having just shy of $25M in cap space if the cap increases to $83M, (without including the additional 10% allowed to be over in the off season).
The Sharks main issue is that Karlsson is just one of their 11 total F.A.'s, in having 5 key UFA's of 7 (in E.K., Pavelski, Thornton, Nyquist, and Donski), along with 2 key RFA's of 4 (in Meier and Lebanc).
Should the Sharks re-sign E.K., it would prevent any worry of the Rangers instead going too far off their closing to a rebuild, as opposed to their more suitable option in Panarin if becoming available. As of now, Columbus has not given Panarin and Bobrovsky the right to talk early directly with other teams. That "discussion only" period allowance begins on June 23rd.
If Shatty's contract in key will be bought out, (or Smith's), and a trade for Trouba is not possible, I would consider a lower cost option in reuniting UFA, Adam McQuaid with Skjei as a defensive pairing, since McQuaid when healthy allowed Skjei to recover his game. That is better suitable than tying up an extra $7M to $8M annually on a much longer term for an also injury prone, Erik Karlsson while at the tail end of a rebuild, who despite his much better offensive game, is no improvement defensively over Shatty. - RangerSaver
I like the McQuaid option but there is no comparison between Karlsson and Shattenkirk. Despite showing some defensive lapses he is still better than Shattenkirk in his own end and Karlsson is beyond elite on the offensive side.
I am NOT advocating for signing Karlsson but you cannot compare the two, not one bit. |
