Good lord .... those are terrible replacements.

Dan girardi is josh gorges 2.0 and a human pylon.

No thanks on the other 2.

Miller from Vegas isn’t a top pairing d and montour isn’t a 1st pairing d.

That’s a very very weak right side d.

- Sabretooth9

Better than having "The Masters Trophy Winner" at $5m playing on the 3rd pairing.
You should actually look at Colin Miller's stats and contract value for 3rd pairing.

Colin Miller should be a target.

I think, not sure TJ Brodie played or has played the Right side for a while

Jared Spurgeon might be available

All of these are severe upgrades to Risto

Girardi

His Defensive play is his positive attribute.
For a short-term holding pattern, he could be the stay at home defensive defenseman.

This is just not true.
- adambuffalo

It's absolutely true. The acquisition of Montour and the emergence of Dahlin resulted in him playing less minutes. It wasn't by a ton but you didn't see the 28 - 30 minute games anymore.

So you would trade Risto and bring in Miller as a RD in the top 4?

Okay. You move Risto. Name me a few defensemen you can replace him with?

Right handed d are in high demand and aren’t many of them on the market

- Sabretooth9

Hamonic or Brodie from Calgary

Why jump to top 4?
If he earns it, yes absolutely.

The "fix" for Risto has been proposed to effectively render him 3rd pairing.
Miller as a replacement for Risto improves the D rather significantly AND saves about $2m

I believe they will still need a top pairing RhD.

I read they wanted to remove Broadie for space.

Trade pick 31, I’d assume that gets you either one.

It could be an active trade market coming. I'm not sold on teams wanting we would have to offer in trade. I think other teams have more valuable pieces to deal.

Maybe, but we would have to add something.

My guess is Botts is unwilling to move Risto.

Have faith. He is a rental.

Pick 31, nylander, and I hope Thompson are in play.

Skinner brought in garbage last year for the canes, and I believe it had to do with him being a rental.

Trade for one long term plan, and 2 rentals.

Your hatred for Risto is well documented, however using your fancy stats to compare a player on a bad team to a player on a great team is unfair. Put Risto on Vegas or Tampa Bay and +20 player on their top pairing getting 65+ points.
If Trouba had been here the last 6 years and Risto was in Winnipeg, people would wanting to trade Trouba for Risto.
The team has been historically bad and Risto is one of the least of the problems.
Do any of your fancy charts show how our forwards don't play defense very well or how when Risto gets the puck they expect a 100+ foot pass every time?
I obviously am not one that thinks Risto should be traded, however if he is it should be for a top line winger, a 1b center or a top pairing shutdown D.

Except stats account for all of this that you are claiming.

Risto’s relative numbers to his own teammates are not good.

Only the elite offensive D men can get away with being so poor on defense.

Ristolainen is not elite on offense. He’s slightly above average

Maybe not playing 28-30 minutes a night, but still played more shifts and had more minutes than any other dman on most nights.

Fair point. I suppose we could look at the Skinner trade as an example of grabbing a guy on a soon to be expiring contract.

I would love Brodie, put him with Dahlin and get a LD with Montour.

Not true, he’s horrible defensively and can’t make a pass out of his zone to save his life. He makes bad reads and puts himself out of position to deliver a hit.
Has his usage been suspect, yes, is his game also an issue, yes.
Erik Karlsson played on some real bad senator teams and still managed to excel, Ristolainen is no karlsson but if he was as good as some believe he’d still be putting up decent number [not just points ] regardless of the team he is on.
I don’t think Ristolainen is as bad as some suggest, but to say he’s not an issue on this team is being naive.

Agreed, but if he's on Tampa with favorable zone starts, he'd put up 55 points imo. Suddenly he's a masterton nominee.

I'm fine with all of that, for the record, but the return for Risto needs to be better than he-who-shall-not-be-named
