The good news with the fractured opinion of Risto on this page is hopefully the same split resides in the GM ranks across the league.
Maybe Botts can get a young, cost controlled Top 6 player |

Jack Eichel and Drew Stafford are both offensive players - OneKaneOneCup
One is a playmaker and one is a power forward.
Risto is an offensive defenseman/PP specialist, and McCabe is a PK defenseman. |

One is great at what he does, the other is replacement level. (Eichel, Stafford) same as Karlsson/Risto
Give McCabe 26 minutes a night (don’t) and he’s closer to 45 points than Ristolainen will ever be 65-70
Hell, McCabe scores the same amount of 5 on 5 goals and primary assists in hundreds less minutes
I’m not even sure Ristolainen is above average on offense

I can't do the "Jake McCabe is as good as Risto with less ice time" argument. Chimera is a poor man's Eichel |

I think Risto's real value is that (unlike guys like McCabe and Bogo) he is a dependable minutes eater and a warrior. I feel bad wanting him to be the piece that we use to get more scoring but it just makes too much sense. Several teams will see the allure of a big, strong, fast, rugged D and think that they can make him into something he isn't (as Murray did with Bogo). |

5 on 5 ice time with Jack Eichel during that time span
30% of Jake McCabe’s ice time came with Eichel - 827 minutes out of approximately 2700
32% of Ristolainen’s ice time came with Eichel - 1162 minutes out of 3543 minutes

If you’re an “offensive defensemen” your rate stats should kill Jake McCabe’s |

P/60 does not scale evenly with increased ice time.
And I know the view of some on this board is that you can put skates on Air Bud and he'll get 25 points on the power play, but that's not true. PP is a skill, and Risto is really good at it. And his chemistry with Eichel on the PP is undeniable

The Bruins doubled the Blues in SOG in Game 7 and doubled them in shot attempts. The Blues scored more goals then the other team though.
Stats don’t lie, but they don’t tell the whole story either. Risto has his flaws, however RHD are hard to come by. I think everyone can agree he is overpaid, but he’s a #4 d-man that has been utilized as a #1 on some of the worst hockey teams of all time.
He is 24 and I don’t think he’s a finished product no matter how many games he’s already played in his career. If we trade him we better get a top 6 stud Winger or C back in return and have a plan to replace his minutes. |

Why? We’re talking about a 3 year sample of thousands of minutes
It’s as even a playing field as it can get, and Ristolainen doesn’t separate himself from D men who most everyone would consider average offensively |

This isn’t meant as a shot at you so please don’t take it that way
But this same exact post has been said by hundreds of people for three straight years and Ristolainen hasn’t improved and the team has sucked.
I don’t care who replaces him as long as they are not the Vladimir Sobotka of D men |

Because the extra minutes are taxing, and he'd be playing against top competition.
If you think Jake McCabe could score 45 points a year, God bless you. I think it's analytics run amok |

he could on an uptempo north south team that could roll 3 lines if given second team pp time
we are not that kind of team
the gm says he wants to be that team
but adds scandella, sobotka, and scott wilson |

I understand that completely, it’s just hard to give up on a defensemen under the age of 25. I mean we can sit here a few years from now and say darn it we should have moved him. Or we could be sitting here like the Minnesota Wild and saying “we traded away Brent burns” or the Isles/Sens that missed out on Chara’s prime. Heck even a guy like Jared Spurgeon this year is putting up numbers better then he has previously and he is 29.
Apart from Trouba who else is on the market though in terms of RHD ? Would we move Dahlin to the right side and make him play his off side ? The return we would get for moving Risto would have to be a no brainer in order to move him. |
