Agreed, but if he's on Tampa with favorable zone starts, he'd put up 55 points imo. Suddenly he's a masterton nominee.

I'm fine with all of that, for the record, but the return for Risto needs to be better than he-who-shall-not-be-named

- jcragcrumple

Points have never been an issue though, and it’s a terrible way to judge a defensemen

His zone entries offensively are decent
His passing out of his zone is incredibly bad
His zone exits on D are incredibly bad
His shot rates are incredibly bad

if Ristolainen got to play on a good team at exactly 19:52 mins per game on NBC more often with a mixed race partner who uses an easton brand stick and sacrifices goats to Ra, then Im sure his numbers would look great.

Your hatred for Risto is well documented, however using your fancy stats to compare a player on a bad team to a player on a great team is unfair. Put Risto on Vegas or Tampa Bay and +20 player on their top pairing getting 65+ points.
If Trouba had been here the last 6 years and Risto was in Winnipeg, people would wanting to trade Trouba for Risto.
The team has been historically bad and Risto is one of the least of the problems.
Do any of your fancy charts show how our forwards don't play defense very well or how when Risto gets the puck they expect a 100+ foot pass every time?
I obviously am not one that thinks Risto should be traded, however if he is it should be for a top line winger, a 1b center or a top pairing shutdown D.

- adambuffalo

Agreed, trade him for Top 6.

My opinion is based on data driven analysis btw.
It's well documented Rusto us actually really bad at the D

And yet 10 teams are clamoring to give EK $11m, and it's not for his defense

Maybe not playing 28-30 minutes a night, but still played more shifts and had more minutes than any other dman on most nights.
- adambuffalo

He was playing similar minutes to Dahlin and Montour. Even so, the "how are we going to replace Risto" question is flawed because we want to get rid of him because he isn't very good. If we have to trade him to get scoring then the worst thing that can happen is that we insert another (cheaper) D that isn't very good.

So you would trade Risto and bring in Miller as a RD in the top 4?
- mhp

The Buffalo Sabres talked to the New York Rangers regarding forward Jimmy Vesey.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s interesting. The Sabres acquired Vesey’s rights from the Nashville Predators three years ago in hopes of re-signing him but he opted to join the Rangers instead. He has a year remaining on his contract worth $2.275 million and will become a restricted free agent next summer with arbitration rights.

Sure it is. He won the Norris in '15 with 60% o zone starts because he put up a bazillion points

You're not suggesting Risto is in the same conversation as Karlsson right?
EK's D metrics are pretty good.
I think we all agree he is pretty special

Erik Karlsson played on some real bad senator teams and still managed to excel, Ristolainen is no karlsson but if he was as good as some believe he’d still be putting up decent number

- Sabres1523[not just points ] regardless of the team he is on.

The real bad Sens teams that went to the playoffs 5 out of 9 years he was there including being one game away from playing for the Cup? Did he excel when he had 45 points and was a -30?

Offensive defensmen are coveted around the league. The Sabres have just never realized that Risto is an offensive defenseman because he's 7 feet tall and mean.

The point totals are completely misleading. Karlsson's ability to drive play has been well documented and those are the kind of players that we want. Risto is the opposite of that. His point totals are inflated because of PP and the shear number of minutes he played.

Nah.

Teams want Erik Karlsson because when he’s on the ice his team controls play and scoring chances

The Sharks get 58% of the expected goals when he’s on the ice. 56% of the scoring chances. Elite, elite PP player

When Ristolainen is on the ice the Sabres do the exact opposite

Yes, he did, because points and +/- are ridiculous measures for D men

The more I thought about this, Vesey plays a similar game to Sheary with a little more sandpaper. I don't know if I would offer more than our '19 4th (SJ).

And he starts above 60% of the time in the ozone, because the sharks are smart enough not to rely on him defensively.

No Risto is not Karlsson. But they are both offensive defensemen. And no, I don't think Risto will win a Norris, even if they start him 100% of the time in the o zone

If we move Wristoe, we better get a RD. The LD needs to be shored up too. I have no clue what the D will look like next year.

And swap Risto for Karlsson and you would get the same results. Sabres still would have been bad and San Jose would have still been in the playoffs. Karlsson probably would have lost his love for the game.

Not even remotely true.

I get you like Risto but that’s asinine

Karlsson is fantastic.

Ristolainen can’t out produce Bogosian
