Yeah its been a Myers esque drop
- Sabresfan-365

Myers second season was actually his best in terms of Xgf and defense

the goal is to upgrade the roster

pretty sure he is better then some of our LW options for the second and third line

we need about 6 or 7 upgrades to slide players down the roster or off the roster

- homiedclown

If I added 5-10 pounds and worked on my shot this summer, this would be true of me as well.

The goal isn't to just upgrade the roster, that's one weak ass bar. The goal is to be good.

I think a group of
skinner
olofsson
vesey
and sheary

is a good group of LW's assuming olofsson can make the nhl jump which I think he can

That's not what the issue is.

His defensive play is absolutely dreadful, so at 5v5, he needs to create a lot of chances to make up for that. Since he's not much of a set up guy, he needs to be lighting the lamp at the same rate as guys like Skinner and Ovi (5v5) to make up for that.

Otherwise over the course of the game most shifts he gets at 5v5 means you're likely conceding grade A chances, not putting them in yourself.

Even if our power play clicked at record levels, it still wouldn't make up for that. If he wants 10 mil, he has to be effective throughout the entirety of the game.

I’m not going to let one season determine what I think the player can do long term. With the start Laine had this year people thought he was going to score 60 until his major slump. Skinner had 20 EV strength goals last year and had 32 this season. I think if Laine went from Bryan Little to Jack eichel I think his even strength goal numbers would go up as well.

This isn’t specific to Laine just all these isolated impact visuals .

Is there a ranking database for the +/- of on ice threats?

I’m just wondering how similar some guys are and if this can somewhat be attributed to coaching.

Like I’d wager Eichel/Skinner to have a similar offensive threat ranking

Laine's most common centre was Scheifele

And it's not just the season that's concerning but the trend. Each year he's gotten worse, not better.

I tend to agree with this view even though I haven't seen Laine play much.
But goals are goals.

IMO, we need some grit in there. Simmonds, Neal or Lucic type.

I thought the first line was Connor/Ehlers-Scheifele-Wheeler ?

Im not sure but it's possible it's available to subscribers. IIRC Eichel's is a few percent better each way.

**all game states

he had 13 goals at 5v5 this year. That's less than ideal

- Sabresfan-365

If only hockey was a game that wasnt always played 5 on 5.

Maybe they could have some 5 on 4s with goals being half as valued as 5 on 5 goals?

That could be fun to watch.

Looking at the size of the Blues d-corps, I think we can get away with not having as much size up front as long as we have the size on the backend. Hopefully Borgen and Samuelsson pan out so in a few years our d-corps can look like this:

Dahlin-Borgen
Samuelsson-Montour
Pilut-Risto

Just watching Laine play a few times this past season, it's like watching a 3 point specialist in the NBA constantly looking for space to get his shot off, but when he does, his shot is most often not going in. Much of the time, it looks due to other teams taking away the time and space he needs to get a high quality shot off.

Skinner better score 35+ every year cause paying a 50 point player $9M a year would be even worse then letting him go for nothing and adding another top 10 pick.

Well, if he is a Sabre next season, wouldn’t that give us a chance to sign? Even if he pulls off a 25goal 30 assist season he may enjoy playing here like GMTM thought. Worth a shot IMO
- lulags

It could work out, but if he does put up career best numbers, it could get awkward too. If they don't give up much to get him, I won't complain. I do worry that he's abysmal defensively, and we have too many forwards who are. I'd love to trade Sheary for him, but that's wishful thinking.

The problem with players or prospects coming in is that most have weaknesses.
Theres very few complete hockey players out there.
Their either too soft, can't play defense, can't score, aren't good leaders, bad in the dressing room, etc.
So I guess finding quality players with the least weaknesses would be the goal.
And hopefully coaching would negate some of the flaws

It was most likely 50/50. He spent chunks of the season even in the bottom 6, few games on the 4th line.

I highly doubt we acquire him anyways so the argument is moot.

I blame the last 2 seasons on having a coach that had no f@cking clue what he was doing behind the bench

Yeah it certainly looks that way. I wouldn't mind all his goals coming off the PP if he wasn't terrible at 5v5. But as it stands, it appears that for roughly 13.5-14 mins a night, the Jets had no chance of generating anything meaningful during a game because he was on the ice.

Even if your power play shatters records, this hurts your team.

That would be valid if the goals he had a direct cause of letting in on 5 on 5 had more value than the goals he is scoring during a power play.

A goal is a goal. Notable exception is an empty goal.
