Niskanen has always played a little dirty. Should fit right in with this fan base.

I’m confused by this response. If you take money away, then the trade is fine. With the experience Nisksnen has, he very well will have to be that top d-partner we have hoped for Provorov. On the flip side, we took on all of Niskanen’s contract and retained 30% of Gudas’ money. Why would we do this? Niskanen comes into our line up as a 7 million dollar player-ish? How are people not more upset? We allowed a division rival take advantage of us while we were drunk and we haven’t woken up to do the walk of shame yet.

Think your over reacting on the term and Amount of Nisky’s contract. I guess I can understand it. Because the Flyers have been in cap hell since it’s beginnings.

He is a very expectable solid leader with a boat load of experience. He will control top 4 minutes at the loss of a bottom 6 minutes. It is a good trade. Cap fans aren’t dancing in the streets. But we had them over a barrel and trade from a position of advantage which is why we got this deal. Nobody is giving up top 4 guys that can put up points like Nisky like that.

SuperSchenn, I get your concern but you should also see the possible upside and the limited term of this deal. A little bridge for our young D.

With the Niskanen deal included we have approx 30 million in cap space remaining. I cant remember the last time our number was that big.

I still think it will cost about 18-20 million to get all the RFA's under contract. Leaving us 10-12 million to do something else. While the Flyers can afford to sign another big name, I still think that will be a trade instead of an outright (big name) UFA signing. That doesnt mean they wont, and prob should, make a nice mid tier UFA signing for a forward, preferably top 9 winger on top of the center they HAVE to get.

edit: Just realized I wasn't factoring in Hayes (who I don't think will sign here) But who will take 6-7 out of that 10-12 million cap space IMO.

So I was on board the “trade Gudas” train and put him on my likely traded list, but after the announcement of the opening game in the Czech, my heart wasn’t in it. That was so cool for him and Jake just thinking about it.

Honestly, I am sorry that didn’t work out. I also wish Gudas the best. He bounced back and played a really consistent game. He has made efforts to control himself and play within the game.

I didn’t think that he would have been extended next season; so from the Flyers, it’s a good business decision. As for the trade, I have already said it. Niskanen’s impact extends beyond himself and into our talented young defense. Looks like a great fit.

My pairings would be

Provorov-niskanen
Ghost-sanheim
Hagg/Morin-Myers

That second pairing seeing plenty of ozone starts.

I would also look into signing a player like chiarot or jordie Benn on a 1 or 2 year deal. Solidify the depth on D. You are still thin if your counting on either Morin or amac as a 7D. Amac needs to be in Lehigh valley and stay in Lehigh valley. The phantoms need him down there it’s important for them to bounce back

- Just5

I may be wrong, but I think Ghost is third pairing, with either Hagg or Morin. Would love to see Sammy clearing the front and Ghost moving the puck. Myers and Sanhiem would be very dynamic but inexperienced. I like all 6 if the Flyers home grown D and would like them to have a season to gel. I don't care a bit about the salary. We have the room. What everyone is forgetting is the original trade proposal from the Caps was Ghost for Nisky straight up. Would rather Gudas and retain a million then Ghost and no money retained.. How much wailing and whining would be going on if they shipped Ghost out instead?????
It's really a move no one considered and filled a need with virtually no pain. As for AMac, long been a fan of waiving him and off to LHV. With his remaining cap hit and the recent trade, we have about 30 mil in cap space. Not needing it all. No one seems to want Mac. Keep him for insurance.

Edit: also didn't account for Hayes but not sure he is signing and the cap space obviously accounts for RFAs and any deal for a 2C.

Yeah, that looks close to getting everybody tied up long term. Cheaper if they go bridge with either Provy or TK. With I’m sure the Flyers would rather lick those two up long term.

I like the Hayes plan if they can get him. He will be hard to sign I think but I like the Flyers being aggressive. He is not one of those “Oh Yeah” signings but will add some good depth to this team.

I agree with you that they have one UFA signing and one more trade sitting out there. They need to use some of their assets. They are going to run out of contract room to sign guys and lose them for nothing. They will be moving some picks/prospects at some point.

Thanks NC. Forgot about the Czech game. Yeah. That sucks for Gudas. I like the trade but I never disliked Gudas.

He did have a really good year for him. Nothing playing above that sheltered roll does him any favors. Not great in his own end. Not the worst there but glad we are adding a good well rounded experienced D.

Good luck Gudas. I will see him a lot since I live in Cap territory.

With Niskanen now counting for over $5M the next 2 years, I wonder if the FO sees the AMac buyout as a disadvantage if they cary his cap hit into 20-21.

Not sure a buyout is needed. Waive him and keep him as a depth guy. Bottom line is that they have the room. If they got cap crunched somehow. Then maybe look at it but I would think they value AMac and will keep him in to finish out that contract.

I have always said keep him. One year will not break us. We can also trade him and retain cap. He is a capable 3rd pair guy just overpaid. Id be tempted to play him as well. AMac has played pretty well every second season since arriving here. Hopefully he can have a strong start, gain some interest and we can deal him to a team desperate to replace injured Dmen. I would much rather keep 2.5 mill over one season than 2 mill over 2 years

This is how I see it shaking out.

Provorov 6
Sanheim 3.5
Konecny 5
Laughton 2.5
Hartman 1.5

That comes to 18.5

I don't see them resigning Vecchione or Varone. Nor do I see Provorov signing a bridge deal. I have no idea what to say about Konecny.

That’s kind of where I’m leaning. Waive him, take the $1M in cap savings and keep him as depth in the AHL.

I think you are in the ballpark for sure. Think Hartman is more the 1.5 though. These are reasonable numbers though.

Where did you hear this? Loved how Bill broke things down for us as far as rumors. Consider sources. Then reality. Then how many conversations on trades that never get off the ground. And then finally how hard it is to close a deal.

Yeah. We are thin on D in the AHL. We are good with Cap for this year. Use him as a solid back up and a bridge for LV to get their D up and running. He is a respected member of the team and he has been a good professional example to the youth.

In the blog two days ago Bill mentioned the leak of info from Hayes camp on not being his number one destination.

Bad ploy to use the media to pressure GM’s. Could back fire in his camp and in the future dealings with this agent.

Like Bill said, sign him with what you feel is fair in the current market for what you planned on. If he balks. Move on and go to plan B, C or what ever.

Anyways, kind of put a stink on his client. What if he does sign here. Oh, you weren’t my favorite target but I guess you’ll have to do. Not a good start to a team and fan relationship. He ought to move on from that agent.

Yeah, I need Bill to break down a lot of things for this simple hockey mind. Bill raises my hockey IQ. Started in the depths of close to zero. Now just a few points higher.

If Hayes signs here no one will
Give a rats a** what was allegedly said. Either way Hayes will be paid handsomely by someone
