I am using my own thought process. If you take on money to assist a team with cap issues you should be compensated. I feel Fletcher could have gotten an additional pick in both deals. Granted the pick may have been a later round pick. But still an additional pick none the less.
- mickel25

They got the better player.

Keeping money was so the Flyers didn't need to add anything else to the deal like picks or prospects.

They didn't just retain the money as a good will gesture.

I didn't realize replacing Hagg with Morin made the team softer.

I also forgot Niskanen has never hit anyone in his career.

- Feanor

I didn't say anything about Niskanen but rather was more responding along the lines of what Bill said that Morin and Hagg on paper and in the current state of the team are petty much it.

Thus removing Hagg makes soft team softer

Bill,

Any concern that an already soft team is now, on paper at this point, even softer?

I think we all hope that Morin handles some of that but man as I look at this lineup, in its current state, it's pretty crazy how soft they lookm

- opeth_pa

i wouldnt consider morin, myers, hagg soft players

Replacing Hagg with just about anyone would make the team better, and thats more important than whatever the vague notion of "toughness" is
- bulet13

I just don't agree with thay sorry.

Hagg is a serviceable 5 or 6 dman IMO which is just as valid and informed as your dislike of him.

I don't know if it's the end of it.... pairs often change over the course of a season, anyway, but I would think that, right now and barring other deals that alter things, the pairs are something like Provorov-Niskanen, Sanheim - Hägg/Myers, Ghost-Hägg/Myers with Morin as the 7th D.

With AMac buried (or bought out?) and Shlemko buried as well.

Again, the difference in skill level between Niskanen and Gudas to me does not equal $10+mil.

Again, I said originally I am fine with this trade but think the Flyers should have received more for all of the money they took on. We don't agree.

I really was impressed with the Provy/Myers pairing during camp last season. I thought they played well together and made it seem that Myers was ready to make the club.

I am not saying he is ready for Top Pair minutes as he could use more NHL experience, but I could absolutely see this being our top pair in a season or two.

Morin was drafted 6 years ago, and he's played 8 games for the Flyers.
He's a total unknown at the NHL level.

It's okay to have different opinions on players. Most of my opinion of him comes from what I believe the makeup of a current day NHL team should be. In the past, Hagg would have been considered a decent defender. But in todays NHL, I think he is more of a liability than a positive influence

Good trade. I’m happy about it. Not going to read much today because the whiners are raining on my parade. Way to go Fletch! Smart.

I think the issue I kind of have is the move is underwhelming....you hear names Like Trouba, Kadri and Nylander, maybe trading the 11th pick for much needed NHL help…...and we get a 32 year old (5.75 + 1 retained) 7 million dollar dman coming off a down year....Its an upgrade....but not something that gets the dial moved. (for me)

This is a fact. I am always confused why people keep bringing his name up as a possible contributor this season when we have no idea what he can do. He really hasnt played that much in the AHL over the past two seasons cause of injuries

One thing no one has mentioned is the impact this has on Morin. Gudas and Morin play a similar game and both are locked into the same side of the ice. To me it looks like we keep a similar player as Gudas because Morin takes his place and get and upgrade to Hagg in the form of Niskanen. Our defense is better today then it was yesterday.

I believe that. Even for the D. This team as constructed is ridiculously soft to play against.

Well, I liked Gudas, but he was the odd man out so to speak. Now the Flyers have to see him 5 times this season. Keep your head up boys.

I meant that neither player can swap positions. My bad.

Unless AV/Yeo see things differently than Hak/Gordo and Murphy/Wilson, I think Hägg is still viewed above Morin on the depth chart (albeit with a possibility for Morin, if healthy, to change that).
- bmeltzer

I don’t know any time since they were both flyers property that Hagg should have been higher on any depth chart than Morin.

Morin outplayed Hagg during the preseason and Hakstol made the stupid decision to start Hagg over Morin against LA and we have been paying for it since then.

There is no way to know if Morin gets injured if he wasn’t sent down because a lesser Hagg was playing over him.

Wasn't one of the reasons that Morin DIDN'T make the team out of camp 2 years ago because they saw him and Gudas playing the same role and they wanted more of a mix?

Hayes may get the dollars but not the term. Or maybe he gets the term but not the dollars. In any event he’s not getting both.

I don’t get this trade we need to get tougher and we trade our toughest dman and get older. I hope there’s a much bigger game being played here
