Not sure why people are hung up of the 30% retention. They are retaining 1 mill from Gudas for just this season. You guys were fine buying out AMac who would have been a higher cap hit over a longer period of time.

I actually find it sad as a fan. But good for St. Louis.

Gudas had one of his best years with the Flyers, because he stayed out of the box more than usual. Niskanen would be a better mentor to our young D-Core than Gudas. We lose some physicality, but Niskanen can play in any situation on the ice. It's only for 2 years. If it was longer, than I wouldn't be happy with the trade. Let's see what else Fletch has up his sleeve once Free Agency starts?

it's funny to think about this

it's hard to believe. I think the Blues have more talent than the Flyers do by a decent margin. I mean they have players like Alex Steen on their 4th line. And their d core is pretty damn good.

The only part of this trade I don't like was that old man Fletcher and his "action bias" just showed that he's gonna throw valuable young assets out the window for veteran quick fixes.

When I say that he isn't in their plans, it's because they kicked the can on it. If interested probably talked to Winnipeg and know the general cost. Both in terms of assets to acquire and future cap costs. Trouba has stated that he wants to be paid like #1 defenseman. I don't think they trade for Niskanen if they were in the hunt for Trouba.

Totally agree with this post.

Blues more talent? Debatable. They played better as a team but Talent wise Flyers are better. Biggest difference is how much younger our team is. We dont have a lot of Vets on our team. The best team in the NHL rarely wins the SC. Its the team that plays well for the 3 months that matter that win the cup.

They had a better coach, a better goalie (once Binnington came in), their top 2 defensemen didn't forget how to play for 3/4 of the season, and they had way more bottom-6 depth.

What part of that signaled that? Gudas is 29 and he has had one good season. Niskanen is a proven asset and is a vet D that is going to be able to help the young guys get better. Not to mention Niskanen is a faster skater than Gudas. You are acting like they traded a young stud for Niskanen.

It's true the best team doesn't always win. Teams get hot and go on runs. Injuries/hot goalies etc play into it in a huge way. I think you have to take the sample size of the 82 game schedule, that suggests the Lightning were the best team by far. For whatever reason they just picked the worst time to play bad.

Tampa Bay was the best regular season team, but there's no good way to argue against the Blues as the best playoff team.

They also had an uncanny ability to connect on outlet passes and actually complete 2 or even 3 passes on the same rush.

Presidents trophy makes them the best team in the league. They won it by a large margin. They had 4 bad games that costed them in the 1st round.

How is St. Louis the best team when they spent half the season close to last in the NHL? That would make Philly up there as well would it not? They almost pulled off the same thing.
