Everyone seems to forget that Zaitsev played a more offensive role his first year and now he has more defensive role. Either way he is a second pair guy at worst.

I would trade Zaitsev, Brown and Sparks for Larsson. If Oilers would include Puljujarvi I would substitute Johnsson, Bracco, or Kapenin and a late pick for Brown. Sparks also needs to be out of the spotlight.

For Canucks it would be Zaitsev for Tanev even up.

Eberle takes a pay cut to stay in NY. Of course God forbid any young leaf think along the same line? They all MUST get their fair pay for their potential, never mind 1st round playoff exit is all they have on their resume.

the suggested deal would look very interesting with Reimer at 2M$... (meaning Florida retains some contract).

Eberle would have signed the equivalent of an $8.3m contract if you translated his $6m contract. That's pretty egregious for what he provides.

Our young players are stars. Be happy for what we have. They also deserve to be paid.

I'm high and drunk but if I read this right....I think all contracts are already represented in USD, so that might be a false equivalent?

But I'm drunk and high.......so.......yeahhhhhhhhh go Raptors?!?!

When Eberle signed his extension in 2012, the cap hit (6m) was 10% of the limit. The Cap Limit for 2019-2020 is expected to be 83m. 10% of 83 = 8.3. In contrast, Nylander’s cap hit is 6.94.

But something something Leafs overpaid something something millennials something something fire Dubas...

I believe you have to look at this as a very smart move by a hockey player in his prime extending his earning years. Eberle probably got more years than he would have gotten if he had swung for a 7M+ annual.

I get what you are trying to say however, if I was attempting to defend either Nylander or Dubas... i wouldn't be using Eberle's previous contract as a comparable

Reimer makes no sense for the Leafs IMO

Leafs need Cap space to sign Johnson, Kapanen and Marner and retool their Defense.

It is counter productive to trade your current backup who makes less than 1 mill for a guy whos numbers arent that much better, has a bigger cap hit and was run out of town once already. You also have to look at the fact that Sparks has I dont think qualifies as having any years in the NHL. The most games he has played in his two seasons has been 20. I think its 25 games to be considered a season. I think getting rid of him is a bit premature. Leafs should be focused on the things above, leave Sparks as the backup, if you have to look at getting a rental at the TDL.

Sparks needs to be gone, he's shyte. That said, back up goalie is a low priority at this point.

Reimer saw himself as that a few seasons ago when he signed that deal with Florida. At the time he had potential and opportunity to be one, take the reigns from an aging Lu. Problem is he didn't seize the opportunity when he got it, and he had multiple opportunities. He would be #3 on that depth chart in October if Lu could still play.

That said, I like the deal. Isn't this Reims last year on that contract? One year taken in for 5 less years of Z. Another defender coming back for a goalie that the coach doesn't trust. Garbage our, garbage in. See what happens.

- leafsfann

You're exactly right about Reims not seizing the opportunity in FL. Stellar for a stretch of games and then his play falls off. There's games where he'll stand on his head, but only after letting two very weak ones in.
Reimer has two years left on his deal

I disagree.

If you go to cheap Babcock will not play him as much as he will not trust said backup.
Which leads Anderson to play more games which leads to fatigue and 1st rnd exit from the playoffs.
I would say 1.5 ~ 2mil for quality backup that can play 25 ~ 30 games and has Babcock's trust.
This may may not fit into the cap but IMO they must.

I've actually come around to the idea that a backup is a high priority going into this season. I'd like to see them get someone who can play a solid 30-35 games and do some load management with Freddy. I'm with UG on this one now. *throws up in mouth*

That's where the team getting Zaitsev could end up very happy. Babcock in his genius decided to change his role when he was good ion his rookie season.

Ya, hate when the Leafs put up 100 point seasons, maybe it’s time to cheer for another team.
