That's where the team getting Zaitsev could end up very happy. Babcock in his genius decided to change his role when he was good ion his rookie season.
- RogerRoeper

He was ok.

He wasn’t anything special...he was mostly a reliable guy who could move the puck out.

That was 3 years ago.....he hasn’t been able to pass or take one since. Don’t trust the small sample size it just gets people in trouble.

I don't fault dubas at all for going with sparks.
He was something like 87-29 with a .930spct in the ahl the last 4 seasons. You'd think that would have translated into something decent at the nhl level, but unfortunately it didn't. Oh well.

Ya, hate when the Leafs put up 100 point seasons, maybe it’s time to cheer for another team.

Babs fault the guy misses every pass he makes - FML

I think if you asked most NHL GMs/scouts at the start of the past season who had the greater upside: Sparks or Binnington, they would have said Sparks. That's the thing with developing goalies though, you never know what you're going to get.

The thing is Sparks hasnt been given a fair shake. The guy doesnt even have a season worth of experience in the NHL. He needs to play to get better. For a goalie to just get called up and take a team to a SC is extremely rare. Guys like that dont come around often. Most goalies struggle to start but they play through it. Sparks isnt even getting a chance. He got 20 games last season and thats all he gets before his plug is pulled.

He puts everything on the coach.

None of Z’s struggles the past 2 years are on him.

It’s all on Babcock for giving him defensive zone mins. That’s why he can’t make a pass.

It’s (frank)ing insane. You can’t go through life blaming someone for your struggles by putting you in an tough situation.

And if Z is like that then good riddance.

At the same time it is a coaches job to help their players succeed. If he stuggles in one area, the coach needs to work with him to improve and not continue putting him in positions where he is not going to succeed. It would be like a Manager putting a programmer on a helpdesk. A programmer works with computer but they have the same skills as a helpdesk tech. Babcock needs to look at a players strengths and weaknesses and deploy them based of that to give them the biggest chance to succeed.

The thing is there are lots of players who have thrived and then had their roles expanded under Babcock. Zaitsev just didn't play well and now is demanding a trade. He could have changed his role by changing his role himself.

When Eberle signed his extension in 2012, the cap hit (6m) was 10% of the limit. The Cap Limit for 2019-2020 is expected to be 83m. 10% of 83 = 8.3. In contrast, Nylander’s cap hit is 6.94.

But something something Leafs overpaid something something millennials something something fire Dubas...

I am laughing so much hearing Eberle and Nelson are great contracts.

Agreed! Loui Eriksson is doing the same thing in Vancouver. Blaming the head coach for his poor play. I don't want guys like that on my team.

Well I'd certainly rather have Nylander with his contract than Eberle or Nelson. I'd still deal Nylander for a good top 4 defenseman. But now that Nylander is signed for long term his value went up. He'll score 30 next year. He's a very good player. But if I'm Dubas, I view Nylander as a luxury and not a necessity. I'm not giving him away for a lowball price. But if the Leafs could get that top 4 defenseman to compliment Rielly (who is a #1 defenseman) and Nylander gets it done then I have to do it. I can't lose in the playoffs to Boston again.

Frans Nielsen, Andrew Ladd, Milan Lucic, Troy Brouwer, Kyle Okposo, David Backes and Loui Eriksson all signed on July 1, 2016. All albatross contracts now. I wonder if history will repeat itself in a couple of weeks?

That's why it's going to be tough for Marner to take a hometown discount. He's better than all these guys who are about to be overpaid. It'll get done but it'll be more than what Dubas would like.

I've always said the key is pay your young stars but be very careful overpaying for supporting pieces.

Matthews makes 11.6? Ok that's fine. Marleau 6.3? Disaster.

Leafs should've kept Lou around a bit longer to get these guys locked up. Then hand the keys to Dubas.

I would argue Lou's contracts are the 2 worst on the Leafs though. Lou overpays veteran non core guys.
