Phaneuf bought out. LA wants to get younger. I wonder if this opens up the possibility of a Maatta cap-dump.

Except now the Pens miss someone like Sheary, but to your point, the follow-up was terrible.

I think we all know how this plays out. The Pens will free up space by moving out Maatta and/or JJ then go sign Ferland.

The Penguins need players like Sheary and Simon at 700k. When they get in the 3mil range, you move on. I don't think we missed Sheary at all.

I'm going to disagree pretty hard. Sheary puts up 30+ points a year and has all the intangibles the Pens were missing and that doesn't cost $700K. The argument is pretty moot at this point.

Regardless we both agree the money spent after the trade was pretty terrible.

You mean Reese and Simon. I agree, I just dont see the need in Hornquist anymore with Guentzel on the pp. I like Horny, just feel we could use his cap hit on Malkins line.

If the Pens didn't already have JJ and Guds, I could totally see him signing him.

Idk about you guys, but I’m extremely good with this just looking at it as a snapshot. Obviously more will come but at least now we have some cap space to play with

He scored 37 points as a rookie and has 2 years left on his ELC. Considering Maatta would be on the 3rd pairing, I’m ok with this deal. Nice way to fill out your bottom 6

Dont know a ton about him besides 23 years old, 37 points last season, played all 82 games. not sure who he played with, but GMJR made it a point to mention his speed so i guess speed is still considered "in" in the Penguins organization which is good.

This is hopefully going to be the first move of many. I was on the fence about trading Maatta. Guy skated with bricks in his skates, but he was overall a smart pick for the penguins back in 2012 and we got a lot of good miles out of him. good luck to him out in Chicago.

The good thing about living in Chicago is seeing a few games and knowing a lot of diehard hawks fans. They liked him there. Young, speedy skater that did his job on the 3rd line and could move up at times if needed. 37 points playing a majority on the 3rd line isn’t too bad, especially since it was his rookie year on an average team. The 5th round pick is also an added bonus. I could see him contributing similar to what McCann.

Damn. I'm really gonna miss Olli. Had some good memes and was a really good player to my biased eyes in 2014. His career trend sorta dropped but I was always rooting for him. I kinda knew this day was coming. At the same time 4 million in space and a speedy winger that could probably get 35 to 40 points in our line up on ELC is solid.

I wonder if Pettersson will get the bump to the 2nd pairing

While it hurts to see Maatta go, I think it was a foregone conclusion...JR better do the right thing now and dump JJ into the Mariana's Trench where he belongs.

If the team had to dump a 24 y/o D to free up salary for the dumpster fires that JR keeps acquiring it's time for the old man to go. I for one cannot wait for his tenure to end.

Pens traded a 3rd pairing dman for a 3rd line player. The big difference is that one came off a solid rookie season and the other has been struggling for the last couple years. I also think this makes Hornqvist even more expendable. Simon, Blueger, Bjugstad, ZAR, and now Kahun can make up a majority of the bottom 6. You also have quite a few forwards in the AHL who will be given a chance and/or signing a cheap option in free agency

Doubtful, but I'd rather see Horny go and keep Rust. I think Horny isn't that attractive on the market though, even though a lot of pens fan seem to think GMs will be bidding for him.

I'm not talking about what we'd "rather" do. I'm looking at what makes sense. Kahun at his price may negate the need for Rust. I'm all for moving Hornqvist, but I don't see it happening, at least this season.

24 year old Maatta at 4.08 mill per is gone but 33 year old JJ who's much worse and 3.25 per is still there. Not impressed. I don't think I could stomach another season of JJ. He better go.

Don’t be surprised if Kahun gets a look in the top 6 to start the year. Credit to GMJR for continuing to bring in young FORWARDS who already have a history of contributing

Could we see something at the draft looking like Rust, JJ, and our first for Brodin and Rask? I’m ok with Petts on our second pair but if we slot Brodin in and ditch JJ obviously that’s ideal

The fact they decided to re-sign Riikola makes me think there's still a possibility they will try to move Johnson.

Dumo/Letang
Pettersson/Schultz
Riikola/Gudbranson
Johnson/Ruhwedel

I could be wrong, but I don't think it's very common to carry eight dmen on one-way contracts.

This is where my head is at! JRs offseason is a failure until JJ is off the team as far as I'm concerned.

I hate to say it, but moving JJ doesn't make it a success if the move follow-up move is just as bad lol
