Jason Botterill is directly responsible for this trade.

I honestly think the the only thing left they really need to do is rid of JJ. Addition by subtraction.

I'm going to be f'n disgusted if JJ is there to start the season and Olli is gone. I can only accept Olli gone if JJ is too...

We'll see what happens in the days that come.

I agree moving JJ is the biggest improvement they can make, but there are others.

Bottom pair LHD. Might need to find a PK Ace forward. There are some red flags on ZAR and Blueger.

Still not sure what the right mix is around Malkin and Kessel. McCann doesn't drive play. Simon doesn't score. Rust and maybe Kahun play better on the right. But certainly added another interesting option.

Having watched all Blackhawk games, I so good riddens to Kuhun. He is a turnover machine in the offensive zone. He is a poor passer and decision maker under pressure. He is undersized and rarely wins puck battles. skates with speed but lacks purpose
- newfguy

Lol the first guy that comes here to talk poop about Kahun. Not a good thing about the guy. Geez.

How about bringing Hagelin back? This could work.

Sounds like he will fit right in with the pens mid tear forwards then.

I agree with most of you. I want to see JJ get traded. If this trade means JR is keeping JJ then I feel like that is a negative for this trade. Also if JR uses this cap space to overpay on someone like Phaneuf then I also believe this could be a loss. With that said. I believe JJ gets traded, and I also believe we trade a winger. I would love to know what JR is thinking. He definitely has a plan to open up cap space. Is it for another trade? Is it for free agency? A combo of both?

I wonder what Donskoi would cost? I always liked his game.

I am a big fan of Maatta, really smart player who was great in his own zone and on the PK, but this deal is a no brainer. His rookie season even strength point production would have been 5th on the penguins roster. That seems like a great depth addition.

Same, but probably too much on the open market. I'm wondering what Nyquist is going to cost. He would be a really good addition.

With the injuries and being so slow it was time to move on from Maatta. I wish him nothing but good luck in Chicago. The Pens were able to gain some cap while picking up a young player and a late pick so I am definitely liking this deal.

I don't want JR to blow the cap savings on some bum - like Matt Hunwick or Jack Johnson. We all know JR isn't finished so it's going to be an interesting couple of weeks to see what is up his sleeve.

That guy is a joke. I wouldn't take anything from him to be even remotely serious.
He tweeted 5 minutes after the Maatta trade was broken that he heard rumours of Maatta being traded soon hahaa

Here’s hoping.
It just seems like such a JR move. Clear cap, then waste it.

I think talk of Simmonds getting +5M with significant term are over stated. There's a chance he signs a prove it deal and the Pens might be his best bet for that. If you could get him for a year around $3-4M I'd love to see how he could fare on Sid or Genos wing.

I would take Simmonds at 1 year for $3.5M over Hornqvist for the duration of his contract. But trading Horny and his NTC plus getting Simmonds on a one year deal seem incredibly far-fetched.

Better off using cap space on a more useful player, imo, rather than just adding another aging, declining mid-tier contract..

I am kind of neutral on this trade right now. Hopefully Kahun works out. I still think Maatta has a few good years left, if he can stay healthy. I understand why the trade pretty much had to made, though.

Sounds like he's staying in Washington. I wouldn't hate it, but I'm a little worried about decline since his game is so built on speed.

Honestly, can be done with a cheap 4th liner.
