OK, so do the last 5 years. A nice round number. Karlsson still has played a larger percentage of his games than Hedman. My point isn't to knock Hedman or defend the Karlsson deal. I think it's a bad deal. I'm just not gonna call a guy injury prone who's played, over a big sample size, the overwhelming majority of games in recent seasons.
Hedman "actually playing defense" has literally not a single thing to do with any of my points, but is a convenient straw-man argument when you're trying to get people to agree with you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - eichiefs9
Ok 5 years. Karlsson missed two less games than Hedman, but Hedman played 800 more minutes over that timeframe. And this doesn't count playoffs which Hedman had played 18 more games in that timeframe.
Also, actually playing defense does add to the argument. Hedman's injuries are due to him playing physical defense whereas Karlsson's are more wear and tear type injuries.
Skinner has had concussions in the past, but I don't consider him injury prone. Bogosian is constantly struggling with wear and tear type injuries which I would consider injury prone. |

I am really surprised the Sharks did this. They have a history of getting shorter term team friendly deals done in the past. That is a big reason why they have been a playoff contender for so long. This seems really out of character. As a Kings fan I'm not complaining just surprised.
I wish the max contract was 6 years not 8 |

Vlasic, Burns, Couture, Kane and now Karlsson. Which is the shorter term team friendly deal? Maybe Big Joe with the short term part, but besides last season he was always around 10% of the cap (17% and 14% the first two contracts. ) |

If San Jose signs some head hunters to go with Karlsson they will be fine come playoff time. |

HockeyBuzz Hotstove: Thoughts on Erik Karlsson's monster extension with the San Jose Sharks? - ToddCordellVAN
They guy might be a touch overpaid, but lets not forget that he is the best ppg D over the past 7-8 years, and plays huge minutes. I would take that over a poor two-way D, such as Trouba making somewhere around 8M and putting up 0.5 ppg. You need to shed Vlassic and Jones desperately tho!!!!! That is 12.75M AAV committed to a couple guys well out of their prime for many years too come. |

Convenient how you went 6 years and not 5 or 7 to have the numbers work in your favor. Make it the last 7 years and that percentage goes down to 81%. Also, Hedman actually plays defense. - adambuffalo
The best is when people arguing online cite terrorism statistics that only include everything post 9/11. |

My point isn't that it's a good deal, it's not. It's terrible in fact. My point is just that one bad season of injuries for Karlsson doesn't make him "chronically injured" - eichiefs9

That's fair.
If I am a GM, I am looking hard at that ankle. It's one of the worst injuries a skater can get. It never heals back 100%.

Sure, I have no problem saying it could cause potential problems down the line. But a lot of people, and this isn't singling you out or anything, act like Karlsson misses time like Forsberg did at the end of his career which I just find to be entirely unfounded.
Regardless though, yeah I think giving an 8 year mega contract to a 29yo is pretty dumb. Doubly-dumb for the Sharks who have a couple of real important guys to sign this summer. |

This is going to end badly from the Sharks.... Almost half their roster is RFA / UFA and they have 12.5 million in space left... - cuethenoise
This is where NJ and our crazy cap space comes in. |

Are they exempt from the Cap? They are near the ceiling and have 1/2 a roster to fill out? |

Thoughts?
Hilarious albatross of a contract for a once-great defenseman on the decline with chronic injury issues.
The Sharks will be regretting that contract within two-three seasons, tops.
If that is the kind of contract it takes to land that guy, I am soooo glad San Jose did it, and not Tampa.

Please. You'd be asking for a towel & a cigarette if the Bolts inked EK65. That's nothing but sour f'ing grapes. |

Assuming the cap hits $83, which is might not, they've got $12.5 million in cap space and only 7 current NHL forwards under contract.
Something has to give. |

BAHAHAHA! HAHA! Ha. ha. And people thought Chia-pet was stoopid?! Wowzers. Did anyone see this goof skate recently? Painful to see such a decline but no one can out "skate" Fawza time
You think Lucic contract looks bad? People will be calling this contract Lucic 2.0 in t-minus..... (3 years?)

nah, not really.
IMO that's a near certainty to become one of the worst contracts in the league.
Not a chance would I want that. |

Way too much for way too long ... especially on a team that already has Burns, and to a lesser degree, ME Vlasic. IMO, the Sharks will eventually regret this contract, and perhaps sooner rather than later. |

Not all injuries are the same. Hedman has never had ankle surgery. That ankle will never be the same.
And yes, Hedman *is* injury prone and has had concussions issues. As such, I would never sign him to a max deal with an $11-million caphit. He signed a team-friendly deal that will end before he's too far down the slope of his career. That Karlsson contract is downright silly. - GalacticStone
OK he had ankle surgery....so what? What injuries last season were ankle related? He had a groin injury, came back early twice and played through it, made it worse to the point he needed surgery. He continued to play through it because he would miss playoffs if he got the surgery at this point.... |
