So.... was Pionk a good prospect? And is this deal a flop is you don't extend Trouba? - Guile
He's RFA so if they can't figure an extension he plays for the Rangers until Feb and is traded. Probably for a late 1st and a prospect better than Pionk...if not more

if Panarin is signed and Trouba is extended, they’ll have to shed some salary right? Didn’t really mean whether it increases the likelihood or not. - Bean_Dip
Wait until the Jets or Oilers sign Shattenkirk to a 5 year deal after the Rags buy him out. |

So many proud Ranger fans who are happy with their shiny new toy. Will soon find it out, it's not as awesome as it seems from a distance.
I'd say it will be a pretty even trade if WPG makes a smart pick. |

Nobody is overrating Trouba here He is a first pair very good rhd defenseman. Not elite but eats minutes and consistent.
Pionk is a bottom pairing defenseman with offensive upside. The #20 could be a great pick. As good as Trouba waits to be seen |

Cap Friendly:
PROJECTED CAP HIT : $63,963,609
PROJECTED LTIR USED : $0
PROJECTED CAP SPACE : $19,036,391
CURRENT CAP SPACE : $19,036,391
TODAYS CAP HIT : $63,963,609
To be signed: Trouba, Buchnevich, Lemieux, Claesson and DeAngelo. if bridge Buch, Lemieux and ADA, estimate around $5.5 plus or more. Trouba will be in the $6 mil range if only one season and no lt extension is signed. That's conservatively 11.5 million and probably more, leaving around 7 mil or so.
Figure Beleskey gets buried in the minors, saving about a million. Vesey (2.275 mil), Namestnikov (4 mil) and Strome (3.1 mil) are all at risk. Shattenkirk (6.65 mil) and Smith (4.35 mil) are buyout candidates. NY would need to clear about 5-6 mil to be safe in order to afford Panarin or others. |

The trade
New York Rangers receive Jacob Trouba
Winnipeg Jets receive Rangers 2019 first-round pick (No. 20 overall) and defenseman Neal Pionk
New York Rangers: A
For teams that want to address their defense, options are running out quickly. The Flyers grabbed Matt Niskanen for their top four and paid a premium to do it for a player who wasn’t coming off a great season. Erik Karlsson just got a massive contract that, if we’re being real, probably isn’t going to age well even if he’s one of the top three defensemen in the game. And now, Trouba is off the market.
He’s not a No. 1 defenseman but he’s a really good second-pair defenseman who can play on the top pair. He’s comfortable playing against the toughest competition. Without Dustin Byfuglien blocking the way, Trouba should be more of a regular on the power play.
“He’ll be a lot better on a different team,” said one NHL coach. “He’s more nuts and bolts – hard hat. … He’s strong on the puck. You’re not going to be scared (playing against him) but you know you’ll have to battle for the puck.”
“I like him but I don’t think he’s a brilliant guy with the puck,” said a Western Conference talent evaluator.
So yeah, at 25 years old, he’s still apt to make a questionable decision but that’s a positive of this deal – he’s still young. The Rangers are going to have to deal with a hard-lining agent in Kurt Overhardt, and if they extend the restricted free agent on a long-term deal, it’s probably going to be for more money than you want – likely at least $7 million per season. But that’s the price of poker. They knew that going in.
“I don’t like all the hassle and the angst about the contracts. But I do like Trouba,” said an NHL executive on Monday. “He’s a good player.”
And Trouba might have the perfect personality to play in New York because none of the outside noise bothers him at all. He’s a guy who has very publicly asked for a trade. His name has been in trade rumors for years. He can play under the spotlight without it seeping into his game.
“He has an aloofness to him that’s probably off-putting to a lot of people,” said one source who knows him well. “There’s some guys that will go anywhere or do anything for anyone. That’s not Jacob … there’s just some guys who don’t care about being in the limelight or being viewed positively outside of how they play.”
The beauty of this trade for the Rangers is that, even if they can’t extend him and things don’t work out in New York, there’s always the option to trade him at the deadline if necessary, where they can likely recoup what they gave up here, if not more. |

Just got in and am pleasantly STUNNED to read this news. Some thoughts:
1) Whether you like Trouba or not ---- he is ours and we are better with him. Even if he folds his arms and won't re-sign here on a long term deal, we should be able to get quite a bounty at the February trade deadline. This was a complete no brainer!
2) Jeff Gorton absolutely killed it in this deal. Maybe he learned that "Jedi mind trick" from Sather after all of these years serving under him.
3) Larry Brooks has proven to be a fraud yet again. You're telling me the Islanders or the Devils couldn't top our offer? No Larry, your "rumor" was proved to be complete fiction...
4) I seriously think we should package Shatty with the Tampa pick or similar sweetener just to clear cap space. No buyouts! Bury Smith in Hartford with Belesky to clear some dollars off the cap if we have to.
5) Draft night can't come fast enough!

Yea Larry dropped the ball.
I think what comes down to it is Trouba probably wants to go to UFA and hit the market next summer. So the return wasn’t much. There is no way the rangers would know that unless they talked to him, and we know they couldn’t, thus telling the jets that’s all we’ll offer.
Trouba had Winnipeg by the balls, but with that said I do think Trouba would listen to an 8 yr deal, probably for 8 per from the Rangers. He has a good agent I’ll say that, and he’s a bit greedy

Gorton did a great job here.
Now when Trouba never has another season like had last year while carrying a cap hit north of 7 million dollars, that is a different story.... |

Elliotte Friedman said on radio today before the Trouba trade that a lot of teams were in on Trouba and that the Jets were asking for a lot.
In a separate hit after the trade, he said multiple teams told him their package was better than what the Rangers gave up.

This is complete spitballin, but is it possible Gorton said hey I may offer sheet Laine/Conner and Chevy was like, what if I sold you low on Trouba? In an agreement to not offer sheet someone else? Maybe possible, but something seems odd to take such a crap return. Because in the press release Gorton said they talked for a few weeks about different players
They should call Tronna and do the same thing. Get Kapanen out of them😈 |
