Tyler Cameron: Rumors + The Blackhawks Draft Dylan Cozens if…
I've admitted I'm no scout many times. Especially looking at these potential draft picks for the Hawks in the 3rd spot, I've leaned on highlights, other scouts and guys like Wiz.
With that being said, for whatever reason, once the Hawks "won the lottery" and jumped on to 3rd, I started my research. I was immediately drawn to Dylan Cozens.
Pop by to see what Cozens is all about and stay for the rumors. |

Wiz seems to use a weekly roulette wheel to choose the number 3. He's had Dach, Byram, Turcotte and Cozens all in the last two weeks. How this movement happens when there has been no hockey for a month is curious. But it's not just Wiz, many of the online draft publications are doing the same thing, constantly moving the players draft order after Hughes and KK. I wonder, are Wiz and the others trying to anticipate who teams will take rather than they are actually ranking players or is there something in the background that is adjusting why the ranking are changing?
I'm guessing the Rangers have some kind of agreement with Trouba otherwise if Trouba goes to Free Agency and signs elsewhere the Rangers GM is going to look ridiculous. |

Teasing me with Anders Lee, that would be very nice |

I know, right?
That came from Pierre LeBrun. So that's legit.
If the Hawks could somehow land Lee, I believe that makes Brandon Saad expendable. |

FYI - RE: Maatta's contract.
Because Määttä was traded on June 15, 2019, prior to his Modified NTC coming into effect, giving Chicago the option of voiding clause. CapFriendly has confirmed that Chicago did not honor his trade clause.
CLAUSE SOURCE: CapFriendly

It was expected that Chicago would go that route, but just wanted to confirm. This helps their flexibility with the expansion draft. |

I read where the cost of UFA defenseman will go up based on what Karlsson signed for. Not that there's any big name UFA defensemen out there that interest me want except for maybe Ben Chiarot. But now that Winnipeg unloaded Trouba, they may have the means to sign him.
I would think that if GM's realize the cost of UFA defenseman is going up that the trade value of their own defensemen is going up also. Maybe not.
Hopefully stands picks up a true top 4 like Pesce. Supposedly Carolina was not interested in Stan's initial offer of a couple 2nd tier forwards for one of their D. Maybe Stan will swing back around with a better offer.

Didn't realize Lee was a UFA. What kind of money do you think he'll get for his new deal? Would be great if the Hawks were able to sign him. |

Already subtracting before adding. Saad was very effective on the 3rd line last year. His first year back was awful. We have plenty of glorious cap space no need to rush, unlike others i still like AAs game as well. But according to everyone here he's gone after his bonus kicks in. |

I think Lee will wind up back with the Islanders. I believe L_B_R posted a few blogs back that they have more or less agreed on salary, something like 6.5M, but term is the issue. Lee wants 6-7 years, but Lou is looking at 4-5 years.
Lee is 28. Some talking head on Sirius/XM NHL channel said that players peak at around 27 these days. It would be risky for the Hawks to sign Lee for those 6-7 years, since he'll probably be really on the downside of his career the last couple of years. |

It's not really peak, it's more like by 27 you know what you have in a player, it's not until 32 typically a forward career begins to decline. That's why Lou only wants to sign him for 5 years |

$7M over 5+ years? - Tyler Cameron
Both Lee and Saad have averaged 50 points per season. I'm not really familiar with Lee's game, when I watch the Isles he's never really stood out. What does Lee bring that justifies paying him a million more per season than Saad? If there is justification there then it's a good deal but if Lee doesn't add a Million dollars of value over Saad, then don't sign him. |

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought 27 was too young for a player's skills to decline.
But it seems like the league is getting younger and faster, and aside from exceptional players (for example Kane at 30) I can see why forwards at 32 are at a disadvantage.

I don’t think the Rangers have an agreement with Trouba since legaly they cant talk to him until he is officially traded. That said, GMs talk to agents all the time so something may have been said. |

Paul, about the only thing Anders Lee really does consistently is get in the blue paint. He's pretty slow-footed so to me, he doesn't really fit with what JC (and the whole league) wants. Good hands.
However, I totally understand why Uncle Lou doesn't want to sign him for more than 5 years. Reason: Andrew Ladd. He's got 4 years left at $5.5M per and he is washed up. That's Lee in years 6 and 7 IMO (and also think that Ladd was far more mobile than Lee with better speed than Lee was/is at the same age/stage).
Hopefully Stan passes on tying up that kind of coin for that long. Also not a great defender. I'd take Saad any day of the week over Lee.

Do you trust Lou's evaluation of Lee. He reportedly will give $6.5. They will bargin over term but even five years is a big commitment. I would not give a Tavarez that length term because his skating may bring him down if the league keeps getting faster..Three, four years maybe but i check how old Tavares is. How is Lee's skating?
While skating speed is not an end all for each member on a roster, there is a serious issue if a point producer fades because he is not able to succeed the same if the league becomes too fast for him.

Maybe Stan is playing chess and thinking three moves ahead. If the cost of a top 4 D is Saad, then Saad has to be replaced, and Lee is the closest equivalent albeit at $1M more. Then Lee and the new top 4D salaries are way more than Saad's 6M. Then AA is moved to gain cap space. Then AA has to be replaced....

Lee has 34 and 40 goal seasons on his resume and is the Isles' captain and is a big boy size wise. He turns 29 shortly. Good player.
But he wants max term on a new deal and that should be a no go for Stanbo. All he needs to think about is Andrew Ladd's decline and injury issues since turning 30/31.
Keep Saad unless a fantastic trade offer comes along for him. |

Not saying the Hawks sign one or the other, but if given the choice: Lee 6.5M x 6 or Hayes 7M x 7?
Personally, I don't like these expensive UFA signings and hope Stan doesn't go this route. Aside from Hossa, many are overpays and never pan out - Louie Ericsson, Lucic, Ladd, Parise. |
