Is there a better option? Habs would keep all of their picks and prospects. - deadpoulet
Edler would be cheaper and shorter term but not as productive IMO |

Daniel Audette will not get a qualifying offer from the Montreal Canadiens, so come June 25th he will become an unrestricted free agent. He could technically stay in the organization by signing an AHL contract with the Rocket, but I don't see that being the case.

I'm not sure he can still skate. Anyway, there's a reason why he would be cheaper. |

They seem to be making room in Laval for the guys they drafted in the last few years. |

Audette did not progress much, he is far from making the NHL based on the teams depth chart |

UFA don't cost you assets and the salary cap slowly goes up every year. I don't want to unload quality prospects for something equivalent when you can potentially sign a player via UFA but the terms have to make sense. - Symba007
I understand wanting to keep prospects and picks but it all depends on which prospects and picks and what comes back.
For Gardiner if it's the direction they go I'd rather see less term even if it means a bit higher aav. 4 or 5 years at $6.5 or $6.75? |

Yep ... just like McCarron, he's a career AHL player at best, can't see him getting any better at this point.
It makes more sense to assign his roster spot to a young guy coming in. |

- We have Mete, Kulak and Benn (probably gone - UFA) on the left side
- That's a combined 52 points
- Gardiner had 52 points by himself 2 seasons ago
- Leddy or Ghost would cost players+picks (and overpayment due to the market)
- He has defensive lapses but that comes with offensive-minded Ds
Yes to Gardiner, give him the 7 years if that's the deal breaker

There's not much on the market right now for defensemen (UFAS). Somebody will give him the term he wants. |

Habs have lots of excess players to move, mostly forwards, along with prospects and picks... I'd rather trade for a competent D than sign Gardiner for 7 years |

Same here ... I wouldn't go beyond 4 years with him while our rookie D's get ready for the big league.
Beyond that we would be looking at another buyout IMO, I would rather renegociate at that time if he's still effective. |

I wouldn't either, not at this time at least ... he might become a valuable asset (in MTL or in a trade) in a year or two.
As for the rest (Shaw, Leks & a 2nd) ... sure why not, we have many picks this year. |
