Considering stats like Corsi look at a whole season, if the player in question is being negatively affected as you described, you need to just gut the team or fold it up completely.

When the cupboards are bare it's much harder to make deals ... and GM's seem to be more careful with signing expensive UFA's these days.

With the salary cap, a lot of teams prefer to build through the draft as young players are less expensive.
