Leafs have the depth up front and need the help on the back end so it could be win win. Marner gets his magic number (in some other city) and the Leafs get to redistribute their cap.

What really hurts Toronto is the media. They are being paid-off by our players' agents to report nonsense. Other teams don't deal with that.

I take this to the business side. The object is to win the cup not to keep all your favourite players. If signing him to 11+ (frank)s them up going forward then (frank) it ...trade him for something that makes them better.

Like I said last night, some team is going to have to stand firm on this.

Offer Marner 10.6 over 5+ years.

If he gets a better offer, then the compensation is 4 firsts and you let him go. I have a hard time believing a team that has 10+ in cap space available will want to give up 4 firsts.

If he sits, you take care of your other business and send Ferris a spreadsheet showing how the offer decreases over time because of the cap-hit problem next year.

looking at his deals, it pretty crazy (or bad), his 2nd deal was also 8.7mil but 17.3% of the cap x5, or 14.5mil today

then he signed a 12 year deal for the same 8.7..what a discount

he really left a ton of money on the table. if he signed shorter deals, he could have made what 30 or 40 mil more?

IMO, if MM wants 11+ then this isn't about lack of Cap space ...it's about a kid wanting much more than he's worth today.

However my opinion is based on what we know. Past contracts, comparables, current cap, etc... There is a lot of poop that we don't even know about. The CBA is up in a couple of years and it would make sense for the PA to be applying a lot of pressure on these kids/agents to max out their deals ...get every penny they can.

Also the PA and the league are probably already guessing at the size of the new US tv rights deal thats a year or two away. Wouldn't surprise me if that is influencing the demands.

People freak out about Marner wanting 11. I freak out about Marleau and Zaitsev making that much next year.
