There have been pretty big medical advancements and the risks of a career-ending injury are becoming less. Even concussions are not the risk they were, look at Skinner, Bergeron and Crosby.

The lure of 8 years is no longer as attractive to younger players. The top tier players all know that the odds are in their favor to sign shorter contracts... and even the shorter contracts are very lucrative now.

I read articles every week by analysts on SN and TSN that take measured approach and predict these guys are going to be 9 - 10ish. It's really only click bate types like Kypreos and Dreger that "warn" us that it'll be 11+. As you point out they're just doing their job.

As much as we've all heard this before, I don't think Florida is joking around this year. They spent the better half of the year moving out cap space once they were out of the playoff picture to go big game hunting in the off season. I don't see them turning around after that and taking on bad contracts even for just a year.
