Good take.
The other issue is that they need to come up with "something" all the time, even when nothing is being leaked and they have no idea what is going on. So stuff gets speculated on quite often. - Aetherial
This.
It's the exact same thing with Montreal in Quebec. Every situation, every rumour, every move is over-analyzed and speculated on.
You take what makes sense and leave the nonsense behind. No point in getting mad about it. |

looking at his deals, it pretty crazy (or bad), his 2nd deal was also 8.7mil but 17.3% of the cap x5, or 14.5mil today
then he signed a 12 year deal for the same 8.7..what a discount
he really left a ton of money on the table. if he signed shorter deals, he could have made what 30 or 40 mil more? - senstroll
That last deal (12 yr deal) was signed while he was going through those concussion issues ....3 years in a row. I think he probably chose to lock in. |

Escrow will be the main reason for this. - Fakepartofme
... and how do you solve that without either giving the players a bigger% or changing what is recognized as hockey revenue eligible.
In either case, the players want a bigger slice. |

Sid took a discount to allow the GM to build a winning team.
This will not happen in today's hockey.

It's why I like Mackenzie. He seems to stay away from the Hot-take and he also is very clear about saying when he is just speculating.

Kypreos is a Moron. I still recall him saying "Suter to Detroit done deal." |

Good point.
It is also worth noting that players seem far less concerned now about locking in term and guaranteeing their money. There have been pretty big medical advancements and the risks of a career-ending injury are becoming less. Even concussions are not the risk they were, look at Skinner, Bergeron and Crosby.
The lure of 8 years is no longer as attractive to younger players. The top tier players all know that the odds are in their favor to sign shorter contracts... and even the shorter contracts are very lucrative now.

Yeah, good old Bob usually takes a step back from everything and brings a more conclusive analysis of the different situations (he's also one of the few with actual sources within the different teams).
He also has the luxury of taking his time and doesn't need to put an article out every day. |

The need for security will always be there. I guess it all depends on what the player values most.
Look at Matthews, could have gotten the same salary for 8 years instead of 5. He's betting on himself performing well enough to ask for an ever bigger amount in 5 years.
But a few injuries.....a bad season.... any big problems and the plan could backfire.
There are also players who don't wanna leave the town where they built their home and family.
This being said, It's most likely a smart move because in this case, Matthews is goddamn awesome at playing hockey. |

I guess, it depends on who you are and what you want. Kucherov and McDavid both got 8 years

Yeah, so while it is a "risk" it isn't *that* much of a risk. Even after he pays his agent and everyone around him, he has tens of millions by the time he is what, 27 or so? |

Come on, non-stop "Leafs are screwed, every RFA is signing an offersheet". It's been stupid. - RogerRoeper
Gotcha talking about it though right? It filled pages of twitter timelines and blogs.
Oh and its not just the Toronto media that does this.
And the leafs are screwed, their cap space is sh!t considering what they need and who they need to sign. So the media wasnt wrong, people just chosed believe they were. |

OK, so after July 1, the Leafs pay whatever % of the Marleau contract is due.
Let's assume they trade him with the idea that the destination team will buy him out, and San Jose signs him for like 1 M.
Which destination teams have the cap space, and the cash for a buy out and what would it cost.
Detroit?
Montreal?
Florida?
Columbus?
Arizona?
Cost... Bracco? Or Johnsson?, Kapanen?, a 2nd?

Habs could take Marleau if they don't sign any big UFA's.
If it means getting one of the players you mentionned, it's more than worth it.

I read articles every week by analysts on SN and TSN that take measured approach and predict these guys are going to be 9 - 10ish. It's really only click bate types like Kypreos and Dreger that "warn" us that it'll be 11+. As you point out they're just doing their job. |

They spent the better half of the year moving out cap space once they were out of the playoff picture to go big game hunting in the off season. I don't see them turning around after that and taking on bad contracts even for just a year.
