OK, so after July 1, the Leafs pay whatever % of the Marleau contract is due.
Let's assume they trade him with the idea that the destination team will buy him out, and San Jose signs him for like 1 M.
Which destination teams have the cap space, and the cash for a buy out and what would it cost.
Detroit?
Montreal?
Florida?
Columbus?
Arizona?
Cost... Bracco? Or Johnsson?, Kapanen?, a 2nd? - Aetherial
I don't think a team would buy him out. Because it's the full cap hit of 6.25M for the entire season. Plus, it seems like he only wants to play in California.
With that said, I could see a team like New Jersey or Colorado making a trade for him. Good guy to help develop their younger players and they have more than enough cap space to make it work.

As much as we've all heard this before, I don't think Florida is joking around this year. They spent the better half of the year moving out cap space once they were out of the playoff picture to go big game hunting in the off season. I don't see them turning around after that and taking on bad contracts even for just a year. - RickJames77
The counter-argument to that is, what if Florida misses out on both Panarin and Bobrovsky? |

the Orpik trade/buyout is probably pretty comparable
Capitals traded Oprik and backup goaltender Philipp Grubuaer to Colorado for a second-round pick
from what I read the Caps wanted a 1st for Grubuaer but took at 2nd because they took Orpik
orpik had a 5.5 cap hit. they bought him out and were stuck with 2 years
2.5
1.5
The difference being PM cap hit doesnt change |

Leafs Cap:
Assuming they get rid of Marleau, Sparks and Zaitsev, AND Gauthier and Petan are on the roster
They have 57.4 million tied up next year and they need to sign
1 Backup Goalie
4 Forwards
3 Dmen
+ 1 more Dman or Forward to make a 23 man roster
If the cap is 82 million and Marner gets his 11.5 (he will)
They now have about 13 million to sign 8 players.
Kapanen 3.5 and Johnsson 2.5 (probably lowball guesses, they could be offer-sheeted at least that much)... assuming they aren't part of the price for getting out underneath of Marleau.
They have 7 million to sign 6 players.
They are going to have like 8 or 9 guys making around the league minimum - 1M.
This doesn't look good. |

Arizona is my best guess ....and it'll cost Bracco and/or a mid pick. Kapanen or Johnsson isn't worth it ...better to keep Marleau if that's the demand.

They'd have to make more moves. I think we are taking back salary in any Zaitsev deal.
My guess, Zaitsev, Marleau, Brown, Sparks and Kadri are no longer Maple Leafs at the start of this upcoming season.

The Leafs mistake was drafting too many good players who became great too quickly.
You need slow risers so you can benefit from a discount deal before they start performing like superstars.
