That's kind of my line of thinking as well..
Once Tavares got his $11M, (he deserved it, I won't argue against signing Tavares) Matthews and Marner probably believe they are both better than Tavares and deserve more money - PatC80
Matthews was going to get 11+ anyway. Marner wasn’t going to sign until after his 3rd season, regardless if Tavares signed. |

That's great.. However, he was drafted by Chicago, he'd hurt the Hawks if he signed for that number with Chicago.
Let me know what Aho gets.. - PatC80
Somewhere around $9.5 or 10 I assume. |

Or they knew they would play with him, especially Marner, but AM benefitted on the PP as well. If I'm Marner and the Leafs had been very open about them playing together (I really wish they would just keep quiet about stuff), he knew that would boost his point totals by default. It was a no brainer at that point. |

I'm fine with Matthews $$, I wish it was 7 or 8 years, but I'm over that now..
If Tavares doesn't sign here, Marner likely gets what Kucherov got. Maybe even a little less. |

Anyone heard any chatter on the Kapanen and Johnsson contracts? |

they were talking about them on Leafs lunch..
Basically said Dubas is more focused on Marner right now.
Once he knows Marner's number and what the salary cap will be, then he'll work on Kap and Johnsson |

Not a peep. But with what guys are getting on deals right now it doesn't bode well. |

It's pretty ridiculous that the league doesn't have a number at this point. Seasons over, teams are trying to sign guys. |

That's exactly my point.
Aside from Max hating Dubas so much, regardless of what he does.. I can't understand why he hates Dubas so much? - PatC80
He just gets targeted because there is an image out there he’s soft and caves in
Really, people get upset when they perceive someone is acting purely out of financial interests and nothing else.
It’s magnified in sports but applicable to any walk of life. People wanna see ‘stars’ in a field seem to care something more than money. Clearly, that is not modus operandi for young leafs.
This is why Kawhi will get a lot more respects even if he walks. He is a proven champion, unlike Leafs young players who haven’t shown any kind of dominance in a playoff, but obviously has other values than max money. |

not true about marner not wanting to sign before start of last season. he was open to sign a contract before start - once season started he indicated not to be interesting in talking new contract until after the season.
there was a window of opportunity there, dubas was too busy with willie me. dubas dropped the ball on the marner contract, costing leafs 2-3milion aav more.

Don't get me wrong, I think Perry would be a good fit here. Play him with Kadri, It just wouldn't surprise me if a team offers him $3-$4M per year. - PatC80
I actually think he may want to play for the Leafs next year. He may get better offers, but he spoke about coming to the play for the Leafs while he was a free agent last time, and has stated his home after hockey will be London. I am wondering if this makes him want to stay close to home |

or maybe Marner, signing this year, sees that marginal second liners are getting over 7, and demands 12.
Perhaps having Tavares and Matthews on the team at their contracts actually helped establish a ceiling, that things would have gone way beyond, due to the Flyers stupidity. |

It’s said Marner wanted 8M for 8 years and Dubas said no. Both TSN and sports net talked about it. But who knows. It certainly looks like Dubas dropped the ball if true. |

Welcome to the new NHL; you'll be punished for drafting well. - PatC80
only if you mistime your trades like chevy did with trouba
otherwise, you need to sell high a player every couple of years. |

In fairness, it certainly seems like TT wanted stability more than anything and likes where he's at, giving a discount for it.
Can't blame other players for trying to make what they can when they can. |

the number is going to be in the 81.0-82.5 range.
gm's probably have a narrower range. shouldn't prevent signings at this point. |

We will never know, but what if Marner was willing to sign for 9 a year then that would be another knock on the Leafs negotiating abilities. They had to know Marner was breaking out even more with JT. |

Kadri, Perry, and another nasty bugger would do wonders against the Bruins. |

there was a talk with marner's agent in a podcast about this (no aav mentioned obviously) where he discussed marner being open to sign a contract before start of last season. i think it was the full 60 podcast by custance, but not 100% sure.
i actually thought this was widely reported (we were discussing aav for new marner contract in here as well) |

they kept trouba trying to win a sc this season.
every gm in league knew wpg has cap issues and trouba wanted to play in us.
they got fair value considering the timing of the trade. |
