Offersheet that yields 4 firsts, I say let him walk.
Offersheet that does not yield that, I would match, hope he has a big year, and trade him next year.
No offersheet... give him your best offer, explain the math on when that offer runs out, and let him sit if necessary.
Just ONCE I would like to see a team stand up to the (frank)ing players and agents. I am sick of the narrative that the GM has failed if an bumhole player decides he wants more than what the market says. - Aetherial
Ya, only thing I'd add is I wouldn't let him sit. I'd have July 1 or September 1 as deadlines and I'd have trades lined up. If the deadline hits make the trade if it's a good one. |

The league will need to change the rules if they want offer sheets.
I remember the old days of RFA signings. The league/arbitrator got to tell you what you had to pay when you signed someone else's RFA.
Blues signed Shanny from the Devils ....league awarded the Devils with a Scott Stevens. Blues were pissed. They still hadn't fully paid the 5 first rounders they had to pay the Caps for signing Stevens away from them.
Exciting times. - The Law
I recall that. One could argue the Devils got the better player and Shanny was one of my favourites. I recall the Glen Wesley for 5 first rounders. Wesley was decent but never became the star the Whalers thought he'd become. Bruins fans are still laughing at that one. |

I'll eat cat poop if the Leafs don't sign Marner.
Actually I'll go further than that. I'll eat at Red Lobster.
No, I can't go through with it, I'm not that hardcore, I'll just eat the cat poop. - Zezel
Just say no to Red Lobster man. That's like eating Little Caesars fake pizza. Must avoid! |

Ya for sure ...Shanny was awesome but Stevens was a big overpay. |

Agreed. Players seem to hold most of the cards now. The whole Trouba scenario leaves a bad taste. Jets allowed it to happen but still... Former players from back in the day must be shaking their heads how much freedom players today get. But I suppose if they were afforded the same opportunities they'd be doing exactly what Marner is doing right now. - gergeswillems
I figure if Marner wants to stay then he won't let it get that far.
I am not convinced he wants to stay. I think there is some truth to the idea that there is something wrong with the players and Babcock.
If they are playing the offersheet game, then I think a team has to let them sign one and walk away. I feel like if a couple teams start doing that, then the players may not be so willing to use the tool if they actually want to play where they are.
I still think the Leafs end up overpaying compared to every one of his comparables and there will literally be no justifiable reason why. I hate the Nylander contract, because they should have let him sit or trade him and the Matthews contract was bad also because of the term. In 5 years, he is walking like Tavares did to the isles.
This is all shaping up to be so Leafy.

Highly doubt that happens.
I see the Leafs trying to unload Z and Marleau.
Sign Marner and add a D. Maybe another top 9 forward as well. If they swap out Brown. - Santo_44
I think the Marleau, Zaitsev will be traded once their bonus have been paid come July 1st.
On July second, they are traded to different teams.
Once the NHL set the cap for next year, Marner will be signed as well as Johnsson.
Sad to say Kapanen will be traded.
That's according to my majic eight ball which miss Cleo was asking the questions. |

You trade him after the December deadline so he loses a season and loses bargaining power.
Imagine the climate right now if the Leafs let Nylander sit. Players really would start to think twice.
Right now, the GMs are caving. |

Some good players avail this year with teams struggling to squeeze them under the cap.
I guess I don’t watch much sports news, so hearing it doesn’t get me all riled up like Roger and some. Haha

Roeper hasn't been the same since Mr. Furrly replaced him on Three's Company. Man, Roeper must be like 100 years old now. I'm surprised he can figure out the internet! |

Hypothetically, would you be more upset to lose Marner or to lose both Nylander and Kadri? |

I think Kadri might be getting traded anyways.
He’s a good asset to get a defender on a good contract.

Oh.. and the players want a bigger slice next CBA.
They don't like escrow, and the only ways to change it are to increase the % the players get, OR make more things "hockey revenue" which amounts to the same thing.
It is about time this poop stopped. I would love Bettman and the owners to be the ones to show up late to collective bargaining meetings, with nothing prepared, sit there and listen and not say anything this time. Just shut the (frank)ing thing down for a year or two.

Kadri could very well be a cap casualty if Marner gets what he's asking for. |
