Ultimately. Nylanders contract is not the worst in the league, but I wouldn't be sad to see him traded. I am more p*ssed at the way the players are holding the GMs hostage and the GMs are caving and it is only going to get worse. - Aetherial
Seems like it only happens in Toronto though. Kinda wish Rantanen and Point ask for $11M+ |

Sure, it sucked for both sides. It’s the way the negotiation went down...who knows who was sticking to their price and who budged.
And yeah for sure...but also he’s a superstar and if anyone deserves to get paid it’s the best player.
He took less money so players like Lucic and Koskinen could get overpaid. It sucks and as a player it’s a kick to the stomach.
I don’t blame Matthews at all for getting paid. Superstars are worth every penny. - Santo_44
yeah.
Right now, it is Marleau and Zaitsev contracts that hurt.
I really think Karma is going to bite us in the ass over that Matthews term.
hey... maybe if Matthews wants to go home, McDavid will also! |

As a non Leafs fan I'd trade Nylander only because he can get me what I need the most. A top pair defenseman to play with Rielly. Or anchor the second defense pairing.
When Dubas signed Tavares last July I was fully expecting a Nylander trade to happen right after. Tavares was a free asset in that you gave up nothing to get him. Jonsson and Kapanen can more than make up Willie's production plus you still have Bracco on the Marlies.
He may have to be sacrificed to get rid of the Marleau contract though. Nylander is an excellent young player who'll likely score 30 goals and 65 points. With a full training camp he'll once again wreck shop. But if I'm trying to get the Leafs to that next level I'm dealing Nylander for that top tier defenseman.
We don't know what Dubas has been offered. I'm not saying give him away. But deal from your strength to strengthen your weakness. I have to believe there's GMs willing to offer a good top 4 defenseman for Nylander who's under contract long term. |

Kadri being traded is more about not learning from his mistakes and letting his team down and sucking alot last year than about the cap. If it was only about relief the Leafs would be talking about a Nylander trade. Leafs are stacked at RW. - winsix
I think Kadri should be traded because he clearly hasn't learned anything. By cap dump, I mean trading him only for draft picks. |

I think that is the biggest fear I have.
Somehow, Marner will get 11+ and Rantanen and Point come in under 10. I just feel like that is going to happen.
You can argue "taxes" but I could argue sponsorship money would be greater in Toronto.
If I felt like the contracts for Nylander and Matthews were "good", I would be more optimistic. I feel they are barely adequate.

Kids playing a sport, he made more money in 1 mth then most of us do in 20 years.
He’s not too upset about his contract would be a good bet. |

Interestingly, I feel the opposite. I don't think he fetches a top line Dman. I don't mind the idea of trading him, but after the holdout and then the abysmal performance, I feel like it would be the ultimate sell-low ... which is also a very traditionally Leafy move.
Ugh.

What bothers me the most is player agents using cap percentage as a measuring stick. It's a terrible idea for the team. |

Z’s contract isn’t too bad, at least he’s playing top 4. I like Marleau and don’t think he played as bad as some in here cry about, but 6.5 to play on the 3rd line when we’re in a cap crunch is just too much, but it is what it is.

No, Matthews will not become better then McDavid. McDavid is Matthews plus 20mph. IMO - Garnie
Way over simplified, McDavid is excellent, so is Matthews. Few players in the NHL have the shot and release that Matthews has. Different skill set, glad Matthews is a Leaf.

Nylander would fetch a Pesce or Faulk but not a Hamilton or Slavin IMO. But I also thing Kapanen is sought after more than Nylander so what would I know lol

If Carolina rejected Ehlers for Pesce, why would they accept Kapanen? IMO, it might cost us Kap and Nylander |

I suspect Carolina and maybe other teams would prefer Kapanen? I would prefer to keep Kapanen over Nylander. I believe Nylander is more talented, but I really don't like the near-zero compete on most nights.

Ehlers has a 6 million cap hit til like 24-25 and didn't play to that level last season. That could maybe be a reason. |

Maybe I’m drunk during the game, but Kap is always creating and isn’t shy to lay the body. With some coaching and more time with AM he could be just as good or better. |

I agree with this. Nylander had a brutal season. Kadri at $4.5 a season plus lots of experience at a premium position makes him worth considerably more than Nylander coming off a brutal season. I would think that the Leafs might be open to trading him once his value is raised, particularly so if Kapanen continues to improve.

Most commentators seem to agree with him? Other than your gut feeling, what evidence do you have to prove that Dubas did well in those contacts? The only thing these guys proved so far is they can’t beat Boston in playoffs, and Boston has managed their contracts far better up until this point. |
