I don't worry about that as much as you do. We need to get rid of Marleau. That's the biggest problem by far.
- RogerRoeper

A team with lots of Cap space like the Red Wings (if you include LTIR) could trade for Marleau and buy him out. But Yzerman will want a good prospect coming back. Bracco? Or next years first round pick. Yzerman should make the same offer to Tampa for Callahan.

looking at his deals, it pretty crazy (or bad), his 2nd deal was also 8.7mil but 17.3% of the cap x5, or 14.5mil today

then he signed a 12 year deal for the same 8.7..what a discount

he really left a ton of money on the table. if he signed shorter deals, he could have made what 30 or 40 mil more?

Prolly the only player to play for the same money every year after his ELC expired.

SIGNING DATE: July 1, 2012 @ 14.5% of the cap..or about 12 mil on todays cap
- senstroll

We don't even know what the cap is going to be this year, not sure why we'd be paying percentages....could come back to haunt a lot of teams.

Didn't Yzerman say he's not taking any bad contracts or buying anyone out?

I thought I read that, but I could be wrong.

Remember when everyone was so confident the leafs would sign all their young stars with no issues.

Good times.

Remember when Dubas said "We can, and we will"?

I think the Tavares signing shifted what Matthews and Marner saw as their value to the team.
I'd guess that both think they are both better then Tavares, and need to be paid more then him.

How can you say that with what you've seen this year?

- RogerRoeper

What has gone on this year that was so bad?

Honestly, its overblown. Its not just Toronto that has click bait media, however, most of the national media are located out of Toronto. So they have to be as impartial as possible....sometimes they try too hard not be too Toronto centric.

He said he's not buying anyone out. He also said he's not signing a free agent just for the sake of signing a free agent. Which is music to my ears. Lou did the same thing early in the Leafs rebuild. Take bad contracts to gain assets. I don't know if Yzerman will do this. Just an idea from the voices inside my head.

People freak out about Marner wanting 11. I freak out about Marleau and Zaitsev making that much next year.

So freak about the already spilled milk instead of the milk you are going to spill?

We all know they are trying to get out from under those contracts. They will be lucky to give away Zaitsev and they will pay to give away Marleau. Teams are not lining up to take your bad contracts for a 4th round pick any more.

I bet he has already made those kind of offers.

I think Montreal has cap space 9?), and plenty of cash. They should also be looking at those kind of offers.

I am not so sure AZ is going to buy everyone's bad contracts this year.

Like I said last night, some team is going to have to stand firm on this.

Offer Marner 10.6 over 5+ years.

If he gets a better offer, then the compensation is 4 firsts and you let him go. I have a hard time believing a team that has 10+ in cap space available will want to give up 4 firsts.

If he sits, you take care of your other business and send Ferris a spreadsheet showing how the offer decreases over time because of the cap-hit problem next year.

- Aetherial

That's actually a great (frank)ing tactic. On June 30th I'd make a very public offer to MM of 10.6 x 8. If he signs great. If he signs an offer sheet it better be for a lot more money or else he's going to look like a Richard.

No problem. Just bend over and black out for a few seconds. Vaseline will be provided. It'll be over before you know it.

Come on, non-stop "Leafs are screwed, every RFA is signing an offersheet". It's been stupid.

Good take.

The other issue is that they need to come up with "something" all the time, even when nothing is being leaked and they have no idea what is going on. So stuff gets speculated on quite often.
