1) He buckled and gave Nylander too much..Nylander was the contract negotiation he had to win.
2) He walks Mathews into Free Agency and gave him too much for what he has accomplished in his time in the league.

Now GM's are being active and he is stuck because he either can't do anything (other GM's smell the blood) or he is waiting on getting Marner (who we will give a massive overpayment) done.

He can't do Kap or Johnson until Marner is done and Marner isn't going to sign which exposed the 2 most prone players to offersheets that the Leafs have.

What exactly does he need to do right now?

bird.
I think most agree that Nylander contract AAV is fine - apart from the AAV first year that is (most Dubas supporters forget that AAV last year handicapped Leafs heavily in potentially adding some smaller pieces apart from Muzzin).

do you think though that apart from the AAV, the nylander negotiations were handled well? with the holdout, Dubas could have opted as well to 1/ trade Nylander for a FW or D, or 2/ let Nylander sit out. Both of these options would have helped with other negotiations (in particular Marner, but as well Matthews, and going forward with Kapanen, Johnsson, Dermott, Rielly new contract etc.).
Personally I think Dubas had a problem from shifting from engineering a winning team on OHL and AHL level to get to a winning team at NHL level - it all gets much more complicated and Dubas is still a bit green.

I would agree that this is not the best time for Leafs to do anything.
Let other teams overpay now for some players - then there will be less competition for UFAs past 1st of July and later.
It would be an issue though if there are no teams left to take any of the Leafs salaries on (Marleau/Zaitsev or a trade for Nylander).
Tough to make big trades/signings now if not clear what the salary cap ceiling will be (although I would assume that most GMs already know what it will be about with a 0.5mln range difference maximum)

Sitting him for the year was not a realistic option. And no one knows what kind of trades were available.

Trouba didn’t want to play for a Canadian team apparently

Maatta sucks balls

Karlsonn was owned by SJ

Braun is ok...but the leafs have better assets to trade for a better d man than that. Be patient.

why wasn't it a realistic option?
it was quite clear that nylander would not be ready and probably put up a mediocre season (even gaudreau had huge issues after holding out only a few months).
eventually, nylander didn't help leafs at all this season, and the whole holdout was a distraction to the team. Team did really well until he started playing.
In addition, it now gives Marner the option to hold out until he gets what he wants (10.25-10.75mln x 8 year) - without the fear of sitting out a year or being traded.
obviously Dubas is not going to trade Marner - apart from a trade which would be Marner for McDavid, I cannot see any trade involving Marner for which Dubas would not be criticized.

yes - it was very clear for years already that Trouba was going to go to US (something to do with his father's company if I remember well hearing a few years ago?).
other players I agree.
I wasn't referring to these players - more to the other potential moves (and I started saying Leafs should probably just wait until bonusses are paid 1st of July and see which UFAs and RFAs are left).
I would love to see Leafs being very bold and offersheet McAvoy or Tkachuk.

Highly doubt that happens.

I see the Leafs trying to unload Z and Marleau.

Sign Marner and add a D. Maybe another top 9 forward as well. If they swap out Brown.

Can you think of any examples in the history of pro sports where a contending team sat out an important player for the entire year due to contract negotiations?

Apparently mccavoy is a unique rfa that can't accept offersheets.
