Leafs don't have those types of prospects on D.
- JohnFergusonJr

How do you know sandin can't be? Go back 3 years ago, most on here wondered if marner was big enough to even be ready for the nhl, nylander was at most expected to put up 40 points. Hyman and brown were pegged as 4th liners. And most of the above statements were made by you then. Sorry if I think you are wrong now.

I get his reasoning, we can't expect Liljegren and Sandin to come in and be dominate right away. Even though, those 2 are the future.
We need another NHL ready D-man or two to step in and be somewhat of a difference maker.

- PatC80

You don't need them to dominate. You just need them to be upgrades on marincin and ozighanov. Muzzin already replaces gardiner.

Because he's not. Because defense takes longer to develop. Because the roles they have to fill are too large for them to take on for a full season plus playoffs.

And no they weren't but if you're going to try to win an argument by putting words in people's mouths well that should be enough to know you're wrong.

Muzzin can't replace Gardiner offensively.

Dermott is out to start the season.

Hainsey was playing top pairing minutes and killing penalties. Played almost always on the right side.

Zaitsev killed penalties with top four minutes. And also RHD.

Four rookies can't fill those holes. You're dreaming in technicolor.

If you are UG, you did say all those things. If you arent...i apologize for putting words in your mouth. As for gardiners offense, he really wasn't that offensive Last year. In fact as a leaf muzzin put up a higher ppg than gardiner, and scored more goals. As for hainsey and zaitsev on the pk, yay they played those minutes but were they actually any Good? 18th ranked pk, and I think the forwards who were threats for shorthanded goals get credit for that.
As for four rookies....why would we need 4? At most you need 2, maybe 3. And that's only until dermott heals. And that's factoring in zaitsev or a dman that replaces him via the trade.

Muzzin gave the puck away like Halloween candy too. And on average, he doesn't produce offensively the way Gardiner can. Gardiner also makes a lot of stretch passes that Muzzin can't make so those are actions not necessarily recorded on the score sheet but still offensive actions. It goes unappreciated but it's true. They were really bad without him down the stretch.

Hainsey and Zaitsev did indeed suck but they sucked with a wealth of experience and durability that rookies won't have. So if they sucked, the rookies won't be doing much better.

Leafs have two guys right now. Rielly and Muzzin. That's it. That's four spots until Dermott gets back. And who even knows if Dermott is going to be up to speed when he does get back.

Well yeah, most agree on that, but I find it hard to believe they don't make a trade for a RHD.

And those Marlies players can be better than Zaitsev and Hainsey next year.

It'll be guys brought in in trade, and dumpster finds. It will be an ugly, patchwork defense.

... might not be a bad thing. It might force our forwards to actually work hard and backcheck to avoid getting rolled every night.

We dont neeed anyone to fill Gardiner's offense really. I believe Rosen could here there a bit however. Dermott will be back and step up for sure into a more offensive role IMO.

Well look for options for Dmen I think via trade still

Just because they played those roles doesn't mean they were good at it.
