Lets wait to see which Nylander shows up after the first 10 RS games.

Agreed. Just saying if they turned down Ehlers, we can't expect the Canes to only accept Kapanen

Can you think of any examples in the history of pro sports where a contending team sat out an important player for the entire year due to contract negotiations?
- Zezel

Steelers - Le'veon Bell.

But I hear you that's the exception to the rule.

The only mistake Dubas made was not setting an earlier deadline. Set a deadline and have a plan B (ie. be prepared to make a trade if the demands are too high).

Love Marner but I'll forget about him in 2 years if the trade is good.

I don't think either team would do it but for arguments sake would you Leaf fans do this?

To Detroit: Marner

To Toronto: Zadina, Veleno, Hronek, 1st (6OA)

That’s a guarantee, hopefully the sexy one who can hockey without being with a top 10 NHL center.

A couple “abandon ships” in the corner and Babs will have him back on the 3-4 line

Yeah my point is if they sat him out and the Leafs didn't win the Cup, people would be going insane. Tampa got knocked out, maybe we would've won if Nylander wasn't out, etc. They clearly could not sit him. Trades are easy to make in hindsight from our couches too.

I'm not concerned about Marner, that'll get done. The cap is an issue but it's because of the core of elite talent we have so I can't complain. It's so much better than when we had nothing. Good problems to have.

Kypreos says Mitch is waiting for an offersheet. So I guess he'd being paid-off by Ferris?
- RogerRoeper

Listened to that interview too. I'm fine with them giving opinions but qualify it as an opinion (MacKenzie does that). Instead too many of these guys say "sources" or "people around the leafs" or "I'm hearing". It's all just click bate.

So mark DD and NK down for "Marner won't take anything less than 11" and "offer sheets are coming".

It’s entertainment, be kind of boring if they said “they’ll sign Marner sometime before Dec 1, thanks for watching and sit there for 10 mins.

I think there should be offer sheets every year, get some excitement going.

Not going to lie ....don't know anything about those guys. I'd expect that the benchmark would be something close in value to 4 1st rounders (OS comp). If those guys are all first round type talent then it's probably close.

Although if their was a similar offer from a team in the West I'd move him there.

Totally agree. Willie's # was right where it should have been ...it just took too long to get there. But letting him sit out over a couple hundred grand would have been career suicide.

The only way MM doesn't get done is if Dreger and Kypreos are right. So I feel pretty good about it getting done.

Zadina was drafted 6th overall last year. Veleno was a later first round pick last year. Hronek was a second round pick in 2016.

Offersheet that yields 4 firsts, I say let him walk.

Offersheet that does not yield that, I would match, hope he has a big year, and trade him next year.

No offersheet... give him your best offer, explain the math on when that offer runs out, and let him sit if necessary.

Just ONCE I would like to see a team stand up to the (frank)ing players and agents. I am sick of the narrative that the GM has failed if an bumhole player decides he wants more than what the market says.

The league will need to change the rules if they want offer sheets.

I remember the old days of RFA signings. The league/arbitrator got to tell you what you had to pay when you signed someone else's RFA.

Blues signed Shanny from the Devils ....league awarded the Devils with a Scott Stevens. Blues were pissed. They still hadn't fully paid the 5 first rounders they had to pay the Caps for signing Stevens away from them.

Exciting times.

Agreed. Players seem to hold most of the cards now. The whole Trouba scenario leaves a bad taste. Jets allowed it to happen but still... Former players from back in the day must be shaking their heads how much freedom players today get. But I suppose if they were afforded the same opportunities they'd be doing exactly what Marner is doing right now.

I'll eat cat poop if the Leafs don't sign Marner.

Actually I'll go further than that. I'll eat at Red Lobster.

No, I can't go through with it, I'm not that hardcore, I'll just eat the cat poop.
