MASSIVE overpayment for Hayes.
Duchene and Panarin must just be in ecstasy today.....if Hayes gets 7, those two guys are easily going to push close to 10 - sensarmy_11
Marner 11+
Leafs will lose other key pieces AND be forced to ice a dumpster dive defense in October.
That seems to be the reality of the market. I guess we have another lockout coming up.

Too bad snakob trouba wouldn't agree to sign anywhere else. Given the return, Johnson and Kapanen probably could gave got him. |

It must make you feel good to wank to that Mats Sundin poster hidden on the inside of your closet door with the electrical cord wrapped around your neck - poopstash
Mike in Basement does the same thing. Not Sundin. It's an autographed Snake Gardiner poster. |

So you make some valid points. You're saying Hexy was too patient. But he was building that team for the long term. Now it seems all about the short term. Do you see the Flyers succeeding under Fletcher? - gergeswillems
So far he's done a bang up job. He's done EXACTLY what he said he would do....instill some veteran leadership, improve the defense, trim the fat and get rid of lower end players, and keep our prospects in-tact.
He's done exactly that.

These teams should be looking at what Lombardi did with insane contracts (and now Blake with Kopitar's) and should have taken notes. The Kings are in a bad position because they can't do a full rebuild with bad contracts of Quick, Carter, Kopitar and Brown. Along with Kovy but I am sure a team will take him this next deadline or the year after when it is his last year of that contract. - Bojangle
Lombardi rewarded his players who won him 2 Cups. That's what happens when you pay players for what they've already done rather than what they will do. GMs are now trying to pay players big money after they've had one good year.
You really have to be careful who you allocate big dollars and big term to. Another lockout is coming and it'll be hilarious listening to GMs complain how it's not fair. There needs to be a system in place which prevents selfish GMs from killing themselves. I said this before the lockout in 1994! Did they not learn anything? Obviously not! |

Drive up league salaries. I get the selective justification. Cheer for the laundry thing. It's my team doing it so I'll justify it. We'll see how it works out for the Flyers in the long run. I don't agree with fast tracking but they do have some good players to build with. Maybe I'm wrong.
I certainly don't want Yzerman rebuilding the Red Wings this way. I liked Hexy's patient approach. I liked how Lou tore the Leafs down and built from scratch. There's more than one way to skin a cat I suppose. Making bold moves guarantees nothing. Flyers fans certainly know this. |

Hexy's patient approach was not working. Like I said, when he was hired he had a 5 year plan to become a Cup competitor. Instead the team was in the playoffs one year, out the next. He didn't trust any of the prospects he drafted, so he gave us borderline AHL players in the 3rd and 4th lines and expected it to all come together. We wouldn't have seen Hart. We wouldn't have seen Meyers...or Friedman. We would have gotten another year of MacDonald, Weal, Weiss, Leier, and Gudas.
Eventually you have to kinda listen to your fanbase and the higher ups and say...enough is enough. It's time to make some moves.
Hexy wouldn't do that. He was happy with the status quo. He was happy with Hakstol as his coach.
In Philly....that simply does not work. |

I fail to see why this is an issue. Slight overpayment, yes. Outlandish? No. Brock Nelson got 6 mil for 6 years. 53 points. Skinner got 9 mil for 63 points
Hayes...55 points...7.1 mil
Like i said...slight overpayment - Hckygoalie31
I mean, you're basically justifying a horrendous contract by pointing to two other bad contracts, both of which are goal scorers, that you're conveniently ignoring their goal totals.
There is no dancing around this one. I thought Karlsson set the new standard for bad contracts, but this is almost double what he's worth.
He's more of a $4M to $5M guy. |

he just signed a lower end player to a $7M contract. He's not getting rid of them, he's bringing them in. |

Am I? Hate to say it....but it's the going rate. This isn't 2004 with a 48 million cap anymore.
Wait till July 1st....then you'll see the REAL bad contracts.
Flyers filled a need for a 2nd line center who can help their PK (which was BRUTAL), Power Play, and play a 2way game that they desperately needed on that 2nd line playing with JVR and Voracek.

Seems like a bit of overpayment by the Flyers for Hayes. However I would not be surprised if Hayes has his best seasons over the next 3-4 years and potentially 30+ goals and 70+ points as a 2C. The Flyers are putting strong pieces together with a really good young core.
The Defense looks very strong with a young, large, mobile team (Myers, Sanheim, Provorov, Morin, Zamula) and now excellent veteran pieces that will help lead them for the next few years. Plus more good D still in the system and add to that Broberg or Seider, both potential #1 D-men.
Add to that 3-4 stud young forwards (Farabee, Frost, Ratcliffe & Rubtsov) the next couple years that help stabilize the salary cap issues. They have a ton of secondary prospects that will fill in well in bottom 6 forward rolls over the next several seasons (Allison, Strome, Cates, Laczynski , Vorbyov, Kubel) and bottom pair defense (St.Ivany, Kalynuk, Hogberg, Friedman, Ginning &Wylie)
With Hart in goal they have the makings of a team built to contend for some time. Backups: (Ersson, Ustimenko, Sandstrom).
I still feel they did overpay for Hayes but there was no other #2 centre available on the market with out giving up prospects to get him. This was only 💰 and allowed them to keep the prospects that they have assembled under Hextall.
If they get a good enough offer they may trade Ghost 👻 in the draft (say Vancouver) 1st pick (Prodkozin or Boldy), prospect or another pick next year.
They have had a top prospect pool for several years. I realize that is just potential, but Hextall has a pretty proven record of solid drafting and all the scouts in place during his tenure are still there, Fletch did not change anything there. The Flyers will be set up for success now and the future.
Don’t sleep on the Flyers they are finally set up to be relevant for some time.

Look i highlighted this because it seems like every fan base every where wants to exclaim to the world how great there farm system is & how deep the pipeline is blah blah blah... the reality is so many of those guys u named will never even play in the NHL or make it 50 games..? who really knows... beyond unreliable crapshoots does not make a playoff team, never mind winning anything...
But more specifically... my god how can u project Kevin Hayes to break is career highs & score all those goals & points when he never has really gotten close... Im sry but this contract is an abomination... I can tell u the flyers & the genius sabres (9 million for Skinner..?!? my god!) will both be sitting on the sidelines for a longtime with these boatload anchor mistake disasters of a contract, im a Wings fan, i have had a ticket to the horror show for a long time... Frans Nielsen anyone...? anyone?!?
Im with the other guy, a lockout is coming our way fast..! its not that contracts are too high... but the current structure & system is about to cannablize itself..! U just cant have players of this low quality, munching up that much of ur cap... it works in other sports because of cap structure options & flexibilities...hard cap in the NHL plus these hilarious knock knock jokes salaries is creating massive problems...Edmonton, Buffalo, Detroit, Now Winnipeg & Vegas... the list goes on & on cuz of retarded GMs who apparently cant count

If this is what is happening, I think this is the year to stay the hell away from the FA market. One year cheap contracts, and start giving your prospects a chance. |
