This offseason has left me with permanent wood
And we still have Kakko to add along with free agency and hopefully some salary shedding - KreiderBomb

no it's open until June 30th
I think during the time they can talk to free agents, they'll have a real good idea of what they can accomplish by then - jimbro83
I think I finally might be onboard with you on the Smith buyout. I still think he can be a decent 4th liner for us, and I still think we could trade him 50% retained, but there really is only 1 painful year with him. |

I think they'll try like hell to do it, and if they can't by June 30th, they'll buy him out |

do we really have to ask the site to ban you so we all can enjoy the next few days? does that really have to happen? - jimbro83
Just ignore him like someone said the other day.
I have to be honest, it's working fine.
See the name, move along. |

The buyout penalties starting in 22-23 season is what we have to worry about imo, what are they for those guys at that time? The next two years it’s like meh whatever as far as cap penalties |

buying out Smith the worse cap hit is 2020-21, cap hit of 3.5 mil
but it coincides with Girardi's cap hit going a lot lower |

I honestly think so too. I think if we really are all in on Panarin, we have to consider clearing out cap in short order. Smith is by far the most palatable buyout of anyone.
Trading for Trouba has a ripple effect. We really don't know what his next contract will be, but it won't be cheap. It's very possible if we got Panarin that his and Trouba's cap hits combined approach 20 million. |

Nah. He was playing well on the 4th line and if he can get back to playing well on defense this year, he could be traded |

I’m sure I’ll get killed for this I was thinking last night, Trade Shatty for Turris, with Nashville keeping 2 mill or so because he has so many years left. So we’d be paying him 4 mill a yr as the 3C, which isn’t terrible. Then they trade Subban for a player
I think that’s the only you can rid yourselves of Shatty, taking on a bad contract. Is that better then a buy out tho? |

I am probably alone here, but I don't actually want Staal going anywhere.
Shatty is hard to move on from (even aside from his contract) because he represents a swing and miss. He has never been what we hoped and there's that underlying "maybe he'll figure it out." element, for some at least. But, with what is in the cupboard it's time to move along.
Smith was another swing and miss, but when we consider the best option is to plant him firmly in the way of prospects and overpay him for 4th line duty and 7 minutes a night, ba-bye.
Staal, on the other hand, improved his play last season. He is not what he was once upon a time, but he is a consummate professional, a great teammate, a locker room leader, a PK demon and steadying influence for the incoming young corps.
Still overpaying for what you get, yes, but we can't buyout every guy that ages and has his play drop off. It's simply not feasible. |

I agree on Staal too. He's not horrible, and on most nights he is fine on D. His leadership will be needed, and he can take some nights off throughout his last season for NYR.
Try to trade Shatty and retain some $$.
Try to trade Smith and retain some $$ as well.
Would love to see Gorton move those two w/out buying out any contracts
