Yeah, the only D i'd draft at 10 or by moving up is Byram so a forward it is.

A lot of people hate on Benning, but these last couple years he has been doing a much better job. It is almost like the Sedins retiring has allowed him to actually GM the hockey team, instead of being forced to try and compete for their sake.

Gotcha. Seems I lost track of him.

Thought he was better than that.

- ImThatGuy

He's defensively responsible and decent along the boards but he doesn't use his size much and can't score.

Dim Jim does it again.

Waits for the first poster to say it was a year too long

- VANTEL

It was, I have been advocating for one year deals until either team or player have had enough.

But, given the hoopla, he did well to keep it to two. I’m sure they will sign him for another two at the end of this one though

A little more AAV for less term and no protection. A really nice contract by Benning
- Codes1087

With all the talk of Edler leaving for longer term and NMC, he seems to have pretty much capitulated and given the Canucks a very sweet deal. Aquilini must have promised another extension post expansion draft plus a front office job after retirement.

Or, like Edler has been saying for years he just really wants to stay in Vancouver.

What are the opinions of Gaunce?

When I first heard Buff/Van were talking about possibly Bogo, his name came to mind.

Yes
My previously made trade proposal

LE, Sven, 10oa

For

lucic, pulijujarvi, 8oa

- SMBDragon

They should look at that. Depends on how they value the year relief of lucic really

If that's all it comes down to, then he signed for so much lower than market value that he should be paying his agent in Burger King coupons.

That's probably my favorite part of this deal. It ensures a top 4 dman and not overpaying for one in free agency, hes eligible for expansion draft, and his contract comes off the books the same year petey needs to get paid. Really nice negotiating by benning
- Codes1087

“Eligible” for the expansion draft is an overstatement. He will be a pending UFA, so while Seattle could select him, why would they? After expansion, he will be free to negotiate a new deal with the Canucks.

I mean when a guy has been consistent with his message for years then follows up with what can be considered a team friendly deal then I think you have to take is word on it.

I should have rephrased as mainly not requiring a protection slot. Seattle can have him for all I care

At what point do you attempt to fix the right side D? The highest scoring offence in the league and defence is the poops (sounds like the TML )

Take the Oilers route couple years down the road and trade that first line winger for some help on defence. (that worked out well)

I'm all for BPA and I can make all the assumptions on how things will turn out do to past failures of other teams. None of them may happen to the Canucks.

Just saying the failures of others should be taken into the thought process of what BPA actually means to a certain team.

If the Canucks trade for Lucic, and have to protect him in the expansion draft, Edler will burn down Rogers Arena with a pile of gasoline soaked Benning jerseys (he might actually be wearing one)

Dude, the Canucks just drafted a dman with their first 2 picks in the last draft, it’s not like they’re completely ignoring dmen. Last year was a better draft for dmen.

They should always be trying to fix all areas of the team by taking who they believe are the best players.

Ideally, in a perfect world, edler signs 1 year deals each year till he retires or we tell him to pound sand, but we all know there wasnt a chance we sign him for 1 year after the season he just had.

I was only joking. I would have been okay with 3 depending on the NTC and salary. 2 is perfect really. I give credit where it is due. Benning did well here.

In a perfect world we had the depth on D to kick him to the curb & use that $6mil to absorb another team’s short term cap headache while adding a future piece. Eg Stastny+. The thing I hate most about Edler is his contract/career will expire and we won’t have been able to turn him into anything for the future (which has been the case for most if not all of our previous core). Having a good Dman for the next 2yrs does our build absolutely no good. He’s a $6mil placeholder.

I 100% agree, it's the best of a bad situation. Having said that, the fact that we are how many years into bennings tenure as GM and we still havent found replacements for Edler and Tanev is 100% an issue.

Very well done by Benning. I really think he has a definitive map or plan for this off-season and he looks to be focused on that direction. All the talk that he was all over the map may simply be calls he's made to gauge cost, interest in his players etc. He's not doing anything miraculous but because he's been active on the phones the reporting says he's all over. I am excited to see how it all plays out.
