I think there's a lot of Sabre history people look back on fondly and enjoy, despite none of these events led to a Cup. "Thank you, Sabres", Beating the Habs to go to the Cup. Fog game. May Day. 80 season. Beating the Legion of Doom. Beating the Leafs to go to the Cup. 05-06. 06-07.

I'm honestly wondering if you've ever rooted for the Sabres to win a game.

Seems an odd experience to never want the team to do well, in hopes of a better or (as in this year) not too much worse of a draft pick. Setting aside $kinner, you seem quite on board with JB's choices.

Besides making draft picks, should he do anything to try an improve the team? If he's not going to try and make the playoffs (and ultimately fail to win it all), there doesn't seem to be much of a point in pursuing high priced free agents. The pursuit of lower tier players would just seem to be an exercise in filling out below-adequate lineup. The only clear goal seems to be is to finish as poorly as possible year after year.

I would hope that Botts doesn’t overpay for free agents, or overpay in the trade market for vets for the sake of expediting the rebuild. Take advantage of the cap strapped teams and acquire assets for pennies on the dollar and use FA to fill out the depth of the roster. The team has to make the playoffs in order to have a chance at the cup, however I would love to see them actually have a chance when they make it and not just be a first round exit.

The only Sabres moments I’ve been alive for were 05/06, and 06/07 (when I jumped on the bandwagon) and those teams were stacked and everyone knew when they made the playoffs that they were cup contenders. There is more then one way to build a cup contender but due to the fact our prospect cupboard is all but dry, drafting high is one of the ways to do that. So yes, I’d rather draft top 10 in the hopes of building a foundation like the 05-07 teams then just make the playoffs and know deep down we don’t have a shot.

Don’t know how old you were, but I know it was just a small kid, sonyou can be forgiven for being wrong.

The teams were not looked at as “stacked” when this run started. It was a huge surprise they did as well as they did. The reputation of most of those Sabres players is far greater *after* those runs than they were before the runs started.

In fact, 05/06 almost all the players were considered pretty MEH at the beginning of the season. The Miller Vanek Pommer Campbell Roy Connolly thing was brand new. Drudged was expected to be really good but Briere was a reclamation project, Tallinder and Lydman were steady but unspectacular.
