What I respect about Montreal after the Cole Caufield pick is, they’re sticking to the small and fast Aspects that they’re known for. The Flyers are known for being big and tough. The broad street bullies. Since trying to get away from what this team has been historically built from, it’s almost as if they’ve been lost without an identity ever since. It’s sad.

There is still room for toughness in the nhl.

I don't mind the York pick. Caufield is flashy and can score but his diminutive size adds a certain amount of risk to the pick in terms of can this kid play against the big men of the NHL? Not saying he can't, but it's a question that I'm sure loomed large in NHL draft rooms of those who passed. Montreal obviously doesn't mind the small player (Gallagher, Peca, Byron) so we'll see how it goes with him. York, for his part looks to be kind of overshadowed on the star studded USNTDP team, but he was absolutely a key player for them. I can see he is a pretty good skater with good lateral and backward movement. He has very high offensive awareness. His vision and passing are top notch. His strong mobility and awareness seem to drive possession and his excellent vision and passing ability allows him to routinely set players up with the puck in position to score. All of these things make him very effective on the PP as well. He doesn't have the point shot of say a Ghost, but does have similar mobility and better passing.

I think the trade back to 14 adding the 45th was a slick move. They may be able to snag a round one type who slipped (Lavoie, Kaliyev etc.) or maybe take a "flyer" on overager with size and skill like Brett Leason. York could give the Flyers some flexibility down the line if they need to ship off one of the more developed young D men off in a deal for a catalyst up front. Time will tell.

could have been: York, 41, 45, 2020 3rd rounder and 3.8m to sign another RW.

The draft combine has him listed at 5'7" 163lbs if that changes anything for you

i guess the only real big concern with York is that he is a college commit. in a few years down the line where does he see himself fitting into the defense core? best case scenario is he plays 2 years or so at Michigan then turns pro. plays a year in the AHL then we see where he is at from there. by that point i would assume that he ends up replacing a guy like Ghost and becomes part of the top 4.

I’m interested in knowing how good a playmaker Caufield is under pressure.

From Flyers website about Cam York:

* In his first season with the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP), he led all defensemen by averaging over a point per-game with 65 points (14g-51a) in 63 games.
* He led all players on the team with a +56 rating in 63 games.
* Led all defensemen in the 2019 Under-18 World Junior Championships with 11 points (4g-7a) in seven games... Led ALL players in the tournament with a +13 rating in seven games... Helped Team USA win bronze medal.

Third bullet is my fav.

Love the pick and love that Fletcher was able to get the 2nd back...albeit a few spots lower

We did need to restock the D as many here has said.

Was Craig Button actually comparing this kid to Leetch and Neidermeyer??? I couldnt hear the TV

York was Billy’s second Best D man pick in the draft! And as we all know reading his pieces and hits here. He has hockey wisdom. 👍

I like the pick, hoping fletch does well today, if they want a pick, move up and get the guy they want, quality over quantity.

So our only complaints right now are cap space and to rich of a contract for Hayes?

With all the players coming into the AHL and there already, fletch we will have to start to use them, trade them or lose them. If Hartman wants to much or if just might be a cap casualty you can maybe bring up a cates who has a really good motor and might do well on the 4th line. I think Nak has a chance but I would prefer speed on the 4th line.

Who are the folks that are a 1 or 2 away, that can play or would want an opportunity elsewhere ? Exclude the big 3, frost, Farabee and Ratcliffe.

Like Allison, if he bounces back this year and is healthy, he would have to know he has a spot. Would you fit him in? Who’s would you move?

I think it was Button that compared York to Brian Leetch. They showed clips of both scoring similar goals on the rush. I'd take a third of Leetch's career for that kid. Tough comparison.

Don't remember Neider reference.

Not great but its weird to me how 13 other teams passed on the Elite Sniper that is Caulfield.

Take the top 2 out and you still have 11 teams that either didnt want to go with a player that small or some other reason.

- opeth_pa

How many teams passed on him twice? Passing up a kid just because he's small.
Geee that doesn't sound like something that will blow up in the Flyers face at all.

And the majority of teams that passed him up drafted players that were projected as better players.

Caulfield ceiling is what? A legit goal scorer. What is York's ceiling? A second pair guy?

I'm sure it will work out perfectly as it always does.

His absolute ceiling is probably 2/3 guy.

I see a lot of early career Matt Carle in him, the way he plays like a 4th forward and is really confident navigating all over the ozone.

It's a solid pick. Safer than Caufield who is basically L1 or bust. Still, Caufields shot and hands are phenomenal.

yeah, with the right D partner he could play first pair, I like the pick and getting the 2nd back is great.

If they have a good target at forward I would trade up to get him today, go quality over quantity if it fits with their board. Sure I would like a few more D this draft but the reality is next year's draft is supposed to be pretty good too. With all the young D we have now on the big club, they can still re-stock next year too.

I wouldn't mind that but prefer the keep one of the 3rds.

My wish list for the next pick would be Lavoie, Nick Robertson, Brink, Kaliev (similar to Caufield in that he may not hit but if he does wow, I think Caufield is much less risky though), Rees, Poistola, Vlassic (if the others are gone). Would trade on of the 3rds to move up for any of the top 5. They likely all will be gone by 40, let alone 45. Not sure how bad Brink's skating is, wonder if he could keep dropping similar to Strome. Fagemo would be 3rd here but hopefully we can get him in the 3rd.

I would liek to see them move up today to grab someone with scoring potential - LAvoie comes to mind.

I like the pick last night, and getting a 2nd rounder. Helps restock the backend depth.

Culfield would have been interesting but Montreal seems like a good spot for an undersized player. Alot of people here have been saying the Flyers need to get tougher or more grit. Culfield was not the answer. Hopefully he doesn't turn into a 30 plus anual scorer unless York is a stud in his own right. I was hoping for Boldy at the 11 spot but I am good with it. We have been having good success in the 2nd round, so hopefully we find another gem.

Looks like Fagemo is slated to go in the 2nd, in that case, barring a trade up, take him at 45 unless Nick Robertson is still there.
