use the 2 3rds to move to a top 3-4 spots of second round would be nice but i dont see a team accepting that as these few players sitting there are viewed as first rounders - with mid-1st round price tags

Picking up the 2nd rounder was a smart move. Lots of upside picks still on the board. Cam York is a solid pick. Similar to how I remember people questioning Sanheim’s ceiling when he was drafted, let’s remember that is working out fine.

I may have ginger-hair nightmares after all the jokes last night about the Flyers having a hair color preference.

His absolute ceiling is probably 2/3 guy.

I see a lot of early career Matt Carle in him, the way he plays like a 4th forward and is really confident navigating all over the ozone.

It's a solid pick. Safer than Caufield who is basically L1 or bust. Still, Caufields shot and hands are phenomenal.

I know they wanted to restock their defense prospects, but I feel like it's always the better option to take the high upside forward in round 1. It's nearly impossible to find high end forwards outside the top 40

Awhile back (like.. at least a year), I thought that possibly trading Ghost would be a good move if you could package him and some useful bits to make a hockey trade that improved the team. Why Ghost? Because he had a bit of a track record as a good player and you have to give something up to get something.

You simply arent going to make many trades these days offering up what Charles Barkley used to call The Poo Poo Platter, which is essentially a team's way of saying that "we know we're giving you crap, but we're gonna make up for it by giving you LOTS of it".

The problem with trading Ghost now is this: if his stature around the league has diminished, then his trade value has diminished and I don't believe you want to be selling low on Ghost, especially when there is the very real possibility that he bounces back. Progression in young players is not linear, and even established players have bad years. It happens.

Long story short: I too am glad they didnt do something stupid like trading Ghost just to make a trade.

One thing about this Flyers front office seems to be that when they want something they just do it. They don't really look for value; they find players they want and get them at any cost. Fletcher seemed to indicate he wants to keep Ghost, so I don't think he gets moved now.

The Devils could end up with Hughes and Lavoie, not bad.

Ghost is also just really good. His point totals will rebound. He has so much more value to the team than on the trade market.

So would you rather

Söderström, 41, 2020 3rd rounder

Or

York, Braun, 45

Nice way to look at it. I’ll take the latter.

I don't mind the York pick. Caufield is flashy and can score but his diminutive size adds a certain amount of risk to the pick in terms of can this kid play against the big men of the NHL? Not saying he can't, but it's a question that I'm sure loomed large in NHL draft rooms of those who passed. Montreal obviously doesn't mind the small player (Gallagher, Peca, Byron) so we'll see how it goes with him. York, for his part looks to be kind of overshadowed on the star studded USNTDP team, but he was absolutely a key player for them. I can see he is a pretty good skater with good lateral and backward movement. He has very high offensive awareness. His vision and passing are top notch. His strong mobility and awareness seem to drive possession and his excellent vision and passing ability allows him to routinely set players up with the puck in position to score. All of these things make him very effective on the PP as well. He doesn't have the point shot of say a Ghost, but does have similar mobility and better passing.

I think the trade back to 14 adding the 45th was a slick move. They may be able to snag a round one type who slipped (Lavoie, Kaliyev etc.) or maybe take a "flyer" on overager with size and skill like Brett Leason. York could give the Flyers some flexibility down the line if they need to ship off one of the more developed young D men off in a deal for a catalyst up front. Time will tell.

Dunno about that Carle comparison. I think York has better skating, mobility and passing and is more assertive at both ends. York's ability to thwart the opposing rush with solid body positioning and stick work is another distinction. Carle played a more conservative game, in accordance with his relative limitations. I think the Leetch/Neids comparisons are more accurate, not in terms of his actual ceiling (those guys are arguably generational talents -- he is not in that strata and won't be that good), but more in stylistic terms and the type of game they played and the kind of skill-set they brought to bear.

I think York is right up there with the top guys in terms of quality D in the organization. I want to see him continue to progress and evolve his game at Michigan, bulk up a bit, get bigger and stronger etc. If he does that he becomes a pretty valuable player, either to slot into the Flyers lineup or as an asset to be used for bringing in a quality forward.

I like the pick, hoping fletch does well today, if they want a pick, move up and get the guy they want, quality over quantity.

So our only complaints right now are cap space and to rich of a contract for Hayes?

With all the players coming into the AHL and there already, fletch we will have to start to use them, trade them or lose them. If Hartman wants to much or if just might be a cap casualty you can maybe bring up a cates who has a really good motor and might do well on the 4th line. I think Nak has a chance but I would prefer speed on the 4th line.

Who are the folks that are a 1 or 2 away, that can play or would want an opportunity elsewhere ? Exclude the big 3, frost, Farabee and Ratcliffe.

Like Allison, if he bounces back this year and is healthy, he would have to know he has a spot. Would you fit him in? Who’s would you move?

- wcorvette

I like Cates since BigE turned him on to me a few years back. Been watching him. He is not ready yet but he is Making steady progress. A perfect fit on a really good 4th line. Can Kill penalties well. Can score some. Smart player. Needs a couple years yet.

From the article, bolding mine:

The Michigan-bound lefty shot scored over a point per game in 2018-19 with 65 points, a USNTDP single-season record for a defenseman, while maintaining a plus-56 rating.

Stupid Fletcher drafting a player who broke the scoring record for defensemen of an elite National Hockey program! What are the odds he's any good!

Phuck the Devils!

I want Lavoie!

I blasted Felch for not taking Caufield, but I have to give him credit for the trade he made. Haven’t been pleased with his moves so far and stated so in an earlier post. However, I give him full marks on the trade. That was sweet! Now trade some picks to get Lavoie, and i’ll call it a good draft!

Haha. Listen to all the haters on here. I wanted CC too but I trust the scouts. Real happy about the trade back and still got a guy they had in their top ten. It was the perfect draft and placement to slide back and still get someone you like. Nice to get that first half second rounder

If York is the guy they wanted all along, then I'm fine with them getting the extra pick. It's never a bad thing.

Cole Caufield scored more goals than anyone in the @USAHockeyNTDP EVER. Think Matthews, Kessel, Keller.

He tied Alex Ovechkin’s single tournament goal scoring record at the U18 Worlds in Sweden this year. He just scores.

GOOD NEWS

My self-imposed exile is over!

Having said that CHILL OUT let the season play out, see how good our signings are, under Alain V, together, with a full year from Hart.

My biggest problem is that York seems less of a swing for the fences guy than Caufield.

If you do not draft elite talent, how the he'll do you expect to sign them.

That is all

While I am at it.

If we would have JUST DONE A LEGIT REBUILD/TANK we would be much further I think.

Because, although we would be without Jake AND G, we would be minus their salaries l and their age.

I accept dying on this hill/argument.

Neither G or Jake will be on this team when we win.

So what exactly was the point of the tweener rebuild.

Mediocrity until success.

We do that anyway.
