Berard was pretty solid until the eye injury. Never fully recovered after.
- TheTrob

He was an offensive dynamo for sure, but he wasn't great on the defensive side of the puck. There certainly is a place for a player like that on a team, but when I think of a true #1 D, I think of someone that I put out against McDavid, Crosby, etc. Someone like Keith, Jones, Doughty, Hedman, etc. I'm not sure based on any of the analysis I've read, listened to, or watched that Byram is in that category. That's why I'm less excited about the Hawks taking him Turcotte, Cozens, Zegras, or Dach.

After first two the field levels out big time. Shaw might be available from Mtl. Career year in pts. Team friendly deal. Maybe there's a deal to be had there. Shaw, 15th pick and a second rounder for #3. Not a lot of difference in this years draft class
- Hardbalz

Way underpayment for #3, any trade with Montreal for a swap of #3 and #15 starts with Ryan Poehling, Daneault, and probably have to throw in Byron also.

I think you take Bowen with the 3rd pick I do not like the hometown boy thing. As you all can see defensemen are at a higher premium.
But on the other hand who would everyone want if we still had the the 12th pick? Bottom line we will get a good player.

I don't understand why people still justify the Byram choice by saying that we don't have a true #1 D prospect in the pipeline. We have no idea what we have because they are all 19-21 years old and are still learning how to play professional hockey. Not to mention the fact that you CANNOT project Byram there any more than the ones we currently have in the system.

1) Is Byram's D good enough (against elite competition)?
2) Was his skill/skating just so much better than everyone else's that it made up for some other deficiency?
3) Do we know how his style of play will fit into the scheme that the Hawks intend to play?

This is not me saying that I don't think he should be the pick, or that I don't like him. I just really don't understand the justification some give for him being the pick.

St. Louis looks like a good fit for him, and they have the cap space
- LAHawk

Agree. Look at Capfriendly and there are plenty of teams with Cap space that could benefit from adding a player with Perry's attitude. Colorado, Carolina, Islanders, and Rangers. Other teams need some nasty and could move some players to clear cap room for Perry. Nashville, Tampa, Pittsburgh.

If you get about 20 goals, 35 assists and a bad ass attitude for $4.5mil it is not an overpay. His play can be contagious. I would rather have Perry than AA at the same price.

Trades are hard in the NHL today, especially with the cap. I think the other thing is that GMs to make silly trades sometimes and we hope they will keep doing it. Last year, not many people would have said "okay" to Manning for Caggiula. Most Oilers fans would have said "no way would the Oilers do that". They did.

Former #5 pick overall, I know he got hurt last year, if no trade, do you think he makes the big club this year?
- LAHawk

Lots of chatter over his value — I think he’s still going to be a real good player. He was improving a lot in Utica, would have been up for the last half of the season without his injury. He’ll rehab and start in Utica, be up in the new year I think. He’s still really young.. 21 or so?

Byram would make him a bit more expendable in a trade, that’s all.

This is a potential flow disrupter attempting to do the job he was hired for. Too bad he picked the wrong candidate in this instance. Like water off a duck's back, pardon the pun. Many others glad to take the bait.

I read the Frank Seravelli article on TSN about Corey Perry. He says he still has the fire and wants to play for a team that has a chance to win a cup. He said his knee had been an issue for a few years, and that now he is finally healthy. I would like to see him on the Hawks for 2 years at $4.5mil. But he could get more money or more term from other teams. He is not that old, just turned 34 in May. I wonder if his play could rub off on guys like Saad and Perlini. It would be nice to see them feed of his physical/nasty/mean style. I see him as a Pronger type. You hate to play against him. He is a jerk when on the other team, but a good guy when on your team. I imagine Kane, Toews, and ADB would not mind having him around. They might get a few less cheap shots.

My thoughts too. But only a get if cheaper.

Think all teams worth their salt, give reclamation projects a thorough once over. The extra bonus thrown in here is league experience. Wouldn't overpay and would have to prove he's healthy. If he is, some team is poised for a potential steal. A little character would be beneficial to Chicago in addition. Young kids in Rockford probably could not bring you that dimension. It is a gamble, but it is worth considering IMHO.
- gabriel

I think you are right. Interest doesn't mean much more than exploring the option. If healthy, Perry can still play IMO. He won't be winning the Hart and Richard again like when put up 50 goals in 2010-11, but he could help a team around the net, especially come playoff time. All comes down to his knee, money/term. He has the talent/experience and isn't that old. People thought Staal was finished a few years ago and he put up some solid seasons with Minny after that. (Staal was a bit younger, but still lots of folks wrote him off IMO)

. Yeah, but not what the Hawks need, we have 4-6 defenseman around 21 that are real good prospects in the next couple of years. Why I inserted Demko, this is Crawford's last year on his contract, and the Hawks goalie pipeline is uncertain.

That’s fair, don’t know the D in your system. Unsure what the Canucks plans are for goalies. Markstrom was great this year, but he’s 29. Demko is the one ready to take over, but also their best trade chip. And they have Mikey DiPieteo that was setting records in the OHL who’s ready to jump up to the AHL, so a good prospect in him. They just need to decide who they’re going to trade as it’s going to be a jam eventually. Maybe they’d part with Demko, but don’t think theyd add another roster player with him.

Would Keith, Doughty, Jones, Hedman, etc. been able to handle McDavid, Crosby, etc. when they were only 17 years old? I don't think those of us who think Byram will be a #1 d-man believe it will be in 2019/20. Maybe not even in 2020/21. But at some point he will be able to handle the McDavid's and Crosby's as well as a #1 d-man can.

You CAN project. It's what the front office and the scouts do. That is the definition of their job, to project what a young player will become. They may not always be correct but what they are doing is projecting based on the physical, mental and character skills that a player has already displayed.

You predict a level, some players achieve those levels, some do not.

My take:

If they take Byram: 2-3 follow up trades.
Why? StanBo has things in the works. Byram makes more D-men expendable and d-men are a hot commodity right now.

If they take Turcotte: 1 follow up trade.
Why? Clear the d room a bit. Probably doesn't like the offers he's getting, so maybe deal Forsling, Koekkoek or Dahlstrom or a couple of those.

But, it should be fun!!!
