Still don't get not offering Claesson a qualifying offer. Not saying that much and he played well enough to warrant returning. - airjan23
Just no room for him. He’d be like 10th on the depth chart. I guess they coulda traded him for a pick, but I’m not losing sleep over this one haha |

Elite business practices by the Rangers. Lose something for nothing. |

This. All I can say about him was he was OK. It's not even the first time that a team declined to qualify him. Someone will pick him up, and he will be like the 7th guy on that team. He's basically the defensive version of Rafael Diaz. |

... And especailly at his "next to nothing" in effect, qualifying offer cost.
Claesson also was McQuaid like with his defensive game skills and play, and team first oriented dedication in getting along very well with all his teammates.
He's the type of depth d'man that they would be looking to acquire at the trade deadline if in the hunt for a playoff spot, but in having to part with a mid round draft pick instead to do so. |

I predict San Jose will pick him up very cheap, he sometimes paired with Karlsson in Ottawa

Toronto would be another option as a Claesson landing spot. |

He's still there. Just waiting on AV to give him a call to be 8th on the depth chart as a power play specialist, even though he really wasn't great at that either. |

I get the depth issue, but no guarantee that Hajek, Fox and Lindgren break camp with the team and it's possible one or more of Staal, Smith or Shattenkirk or elsewhere, so why not have a solid blueliner making less than $1 million to plug and play. Also, does anyone know if he could have been optioned down without passing through waivers? |

I think they'll be plenty of guys like Claesson available July 1st and if they really want him back, doesn't mean they still can't sign him anyway |

Dreger mentioned today that the Canucks are seeking to acquire an experienced d'man in a trade, with Tyson Barrie being heavily rumored as their target.
That would take the worry away of any possible trade package involving Kreider being dealt for Barrie as the two big pieces in any deal. |
