Where did you read this Nelson? I’d probably think about this trade. It’s not like Rust has been lights out. Puljujarvi could pay big dividends. - Barnaby36
@KurtLeavins tweeted it, Edmonton reporter. He doesnt think Pens would do it. I agree, I wouldnt unless it unloads other salary. |

Poulin is two-three years away from making the jump to the National Hockey League. But there is a lot of promise. The Red Line Report, a yearly scouting service utilized by NHL teams as well as media outlets and fans, had the following summary of Poulin:
"Big, physical brute dominates along the walls and down below the circles in the offensive zone. Pro style winger plays a north-south game. Wins corner battles and then regularly makes power moves straight into the slot, shrugging off checks. Walks pucks off the goal line into the crease. Has a heavy shot and good scoring touch around the net, but also is very underrated as a playmaker. Dangerous coming off the cycle, and late in the year showed some east-west wiggle and hands to dangle through traffic.
"Plays a forceful, rugged game in contested areas, relishing the chance to get his hands dirty. Utilizes wide frame protecting the puck to get shots off under duress. Strong on his stick and great at fighting pucks out of scrums into space. Has continued to take consistent steps in his development and works hard away from puck. Still needs to improve his first step and overall stride."
The Red Line Report projected him as a second-line scoring winger and compared his style to Nino Niederreiter with this one-line summary: "Powerful, dominant force down low doesn't get his due." |

This young guy seems like a pain in the ***, but I get wanting out of Edmonton. Personally, I think this is the exact kind of guy we need to take a chance on. Young guy, clearly has some talent... getting him would be a solid move for us.
Guys like Rust are valuable, but you can only have so many guys like him. Rust has a limited ceiling and has been widely inconsistent. I think he is a solid player and wouldnt be thrilled about trading him, but I think if you make a deal centered around these two guys, the Penguins should do it. I'd like the Oilers to either take a contract or throw in a pick. |

Whaaaaaaat? - j.boyd919
What I meant is if they drafted a player at 21st overall that makes it to the NHL and sticks in the NHL in the bottom 6 that's not so bad. Think about how many guys that get drafted in 1st round and never even see the NHL, let alone see it and not get a regular shift. |

I agree 100% I think there should be something more to this deal just not a 1 for 1. Unless many of you are correct and JR is moving out salary for a FA signing. I have this terrible feeling from the old man's comments that he isnt going to do anything else the rest of the offseason. Much like I said in another post, this roster was closer towards missing the playoffs last year than winning it. My friend in the organization almost confirms that JR thinks the roster as a whole underperformed and could do better....

Y'all want to take Bob McKenzie's word like the gospel .. he had him ranked 24th. Most of the scouting ranks had him going in low to mid 20s. He could always be traded too....never really know how any player will work out but this guy definitely has some upside

Would’ve nice to draft some grit, character, leadership, shot blocking and intangibles for once. |

So, I wanted to sleep on the pick before commenting...I did...I don’t know if it helped me feel any better about it.
Not that I thought at 21 they were going to get a top line, NHL ready player, but from what I have read, this guys a bigger project and gamble to be the 2nd line power forward they project him to possibly be than the sexier pick of say Suzuki.
Someone please tell me I am wrong and should feel really good about the pick. |

He wasn't the BPA, but he wasn't a bad pick either. Every player in this range has their warts. Seems a solid chance they got a good middle six wing with top 6 hands and size but only an average skater with bad technique in his first few steps (which can be improved and seems he knows it and is taking steps to address it). At 21 you can usually be happy about.
There were a few guys I was higher on like Levoie and Hoglander. There were a couple sexier picks I wasn't as high on like Suzuki and Brink.
The one that hurts is Kaliyev, but the concerns were about his effort level so maybe that's a Spring situation again with a ton of talent, but the guy doesn't think he needs to improve. I'd take the chance though. |

It's a gamble the Pens are at least in a position to consider after adding Kahun And if they wanted to dump a little salary there are worse ways to do it.
But I'd probably keep Rust. Most guys aren't going to repeat Jake Guentzel's feat of becoming a top scorer without top PP time, so the ceiling for a guy like Puljujarvi is limited here. |

Draft is boring. Last draft I payed attention to Tom Kuhnhackl was drafted. Let me know when they are prepared to block a 100 mph slap shot with 3 minutes left in game seven. Then I’ll start paying attention to a player. |

Is it safe to say Samuel Poulin is kind of Josh Anderson, Boone Jenner and Nino Niederreiter? |

He was pretty dead on. He's not a prospect analyst, but as far as sports broadcasters/journalists(whatever you want to call him) go, he's by far one of more informed in the business. He really does his research in all areas he comments on. |

Yeah for sure, but he is still pretty knowledgeable on prospects and he did almost nail this guys draft number precisely. The rest of the scouting I've seen had him around the exact same spot except for 2 had him going early 30's. |

Well this blows. I don't understand why the NHLPA has been dragging their feet.
