Miller is a solid and versatile player, but I would have never expected a 1st, less yet bundled with a 3rd and a prospect. How good is this Marek kid? |

They're an Elias injury from bottom 5. - golfingsince
He missed 20 games last season and they weren't a bottom 5 team. |

Team makes trades to get better and some think the team will now be back to a bottom 5 team.
Van isn't Ottawa. Van has 2 good goaltenders and top 4 D not one single young D and no goaltending - manvanfan
Who knows man, that's 2 years from now. poop changes fast, Ottawa made the ECF when they made those deals, they were far from a laughing stock at that time.
There's too many variables to say for sure that this will be a playoff team in 2 years. Injuries, development, team chemistry, coaching, goaltending, etc will all play a factor.
It doesn't have to be a top 5 or even top 10 pick for this to be an overpay.
Even a top 15 pick + 3rd round pick for J.T. Miller from a desperate Tampa team is an overpay.
Look at what Subban was just dealt for and he's a top pairing dman. |

Sometimes you have to pay a price to get better. JT Miller is on a good mid level contract for the next 5 years? You won't see the 2020 or 2021 first round pick for probably 5 years. - manvanfan
This wasn't one of those times. PK Subban just went for arguably less. |

@Bob McKenzie
BTW, if the conditional VAN first-rounder to TB slides to 2021 (because the Canucks miss the playoffs in 2020), that 2021 first-rounder is not lottery protected. |

Im Calling it now ...Tampa will win the lotto with the canucks 2021 pick with the canucks missing the playoffs by one point and all of HockeyBuzz will shutdown |

They were 5 points up on it and their goalie played lights out. |

Well poop, I'll take throw-ins with a 1st pick.
I have to agree with most of the posters here. Tampa appears to have committed larceny here.
Miller is solid, but I'm not sure he's worth a package that includes a 1st.

I was okay with the 10 pick but Miller a 13 goal player for a first is just plain idiotic. What a crap group of management. Not one of them is going to say hey that’s too much? Fak me. |

the new lotto odds make this pretty dumb as well, at least Benning should have pushed for the pick turning into a 2nd + 3rd in case it's a top 10 pick. |

It's the situation that makes it more frustrating.
We just saw what Subban got traded for and how the Leafs had to bend over just to dump Marleau.
Tampa was in a similar desperate spot, yet Jim paid full value or arguably even more than full value. |

He's also a top pairing dman, not a 2nd line winger. And that 5.25M was killing Tampa's cap.
Jim should be the shark in this scenario, not the bait worm. |

Jim’s gotta have another trade lined up where he gets a first back. Maybe Vegas? |

Ryan O'Reilly how many people freaked out about the price in January and now it's a steal of a trade. |

Briesbois must have learned the Jedi Mind Trick from Yzerman.
Miller is frustrating. Looks great for 5 or 6 games and then turns into a ghost for the next dozen.
The 3rd and a prospect would have been about right. Benning must be in a generous mood.

That would be nice and make this easier to swallow, but I'll believe it when I see it. |
