To be fair, Edm taking a Dman would have made sense for many of the past drafts - dbot

He also says there is 4 players left he really likes & hopes to get at 40. - Nighthawk
Brink would be sweet, but I think he'll be gone for sure by then. Hoping for Rees, I have him a tier above Grewe who I know is a popular pick here. |

The last 2 cup winners had Russian tanks as their best players. Could Podzy be in the same mold? Kucherov is fantastic but it ended in 4 lol - Nighthawk

Yeah, I think we should be happy if Podzy can develop into a solid 2nd line power winger that can consistently score 20+ goals and play effectively in all 3 zones. That's still a pretty valuable player. |

Won’t take much for Podzy to be a tank.
He’s not going to be a finesse player.
More like the Russian Tkachuk. |

He’s behind Boeser on RW but has a different tool box to use. A good blend of skills we lack. |

Its too bad that Zegras didnt drop to us, but I really think we got a steal with Vasily still. Just wait, in 2 years hes gonna step into a more mature and established team and system and im saying right now lots of people are gonna be surprised. I think his drive to be a dominant player will benefit this team immensely one day. We have a legit top 6 scoring winger now... Kinda -_-.
Thanks, Carol. - WestCoastDistress
You think boeser isn't a legit top 6? |

Really
You just knew Holland would grab that Swedish Dman. - dbot
Broberg to Edmonton was one u called mobths ago. Classic holland guys. Kpod was a surprise but huge upside. Like it based on scouting reports |

Lavoie, Leason or Afanasyev at 40, would be fine by me.
Not to worried about the Pod pick, as he is a solid safe pick, that should be able to play top 6 when he finally arrives. |

Warming up to this Russian.
Anyone know if he can attend youngstars/training camp or does his contract forbid it? |

Benning confirms it would have cost the second pick to get Zegras. KPod would have been a top 5 pick if he was American |

Felt a little disappointed when they announced him — but like Carol I felt the same with Petey and Horvat, and those turned out well. Didn’t feel as disappointed with Virt, so who knows? Lol
And ya, Zegras would have been great, but I’m sure Anaheim has him ranked pretty high as well so didn’t want to easily give up that spot. If JB thought he was going to be head and shoulders above KPod, then giving the second up makes sense. If not, it’s not worth giving up two prospects for one. |

I thought it showed the direction of the club. I was surprised for about one minute but realized this is a damn good pick. The guy was ranked #3 at Xmas but all you ever heard was he was signed for two more years.
I said all last year that whomever we drafted at 10 was going to take 2-3 years to develop. To me it showed Jim is not listening to the white noise from the media and doesn't seem to be in a "I must win now mode or I will be fired"
Solid pick . I will enjoy the rest of the draft and hopefully a trade or two.

Benning on Podkolzin: “He was the name where if he wasn’t there at No. 10, we were looking to maybe trade down and get another pick. Once he gets over here (from KHL) he can step in and play.” #Canucks #NHLDraft19
So if Anaheim took Podkolzin, Van would have traded down? |

I wasn’t surprised at all. Benning has big balls at the draft. Crazy pick but I like it. |

Benning sees a Timo Meier type who can work the walls and play with speed and strength, but needs to work on his shot.
Took 3 years for Meier to get to the NHL and had 36 points in 81 games. Last season 66pts in 78 games and 15pts in 20 playoff games.
If he turns into Timo Meier, so much fun to watch.
“He’s got the size and strength and can get to the net,” said Benning. “He’s going to be a good complementary player for some of our really skilled players. He plays a heavy game and we’ve seen in the playoffs that you need those strong guys who can get to the net and protect the puck. |
