The draft is fine and I love getting Miller, but not at the cost. Benning loses future leverage when they may in fact be challenging for the second round. It’s just the wrong time to be trading a first.
You’re seeing a lame duck GM not caring about the future because if he doesn’t make the playoffs he has no future. - Pacificgem

How do we go through a whole draft and not draft a D? - Shuswap Wap
Easily, we identify a need and we completely ignore it. |

They were too focused on gift wrapping the Tampa trade. |

I don't like the trade but I still need to see how it plays out this year.
I like our trade a hell of a lot better than Toronto's trade a first a 7 th for a 6 th

I like the trade. I’m not overly concerned about what I assume will be a pick in the 20-25 range two drafts from now. Trade maelstrom for a 2021 first. Problem solved - CanuckDon
Who knows?
That's a big gamble.
Acquiring another 1st is great, but if 2020 and 2021 become lottery picks..... |

We talked the other day and I said I was more up for getting a player that would actually play (Marleau vs Miller), but Tampa got exactly what it needed in cap relief and a first and third round pick to boot. Should have been Goldy and a 3rd for Miller... |

The Canucks are easily the laughing stock of the NHL. What a f*cking disgrace Benning is as a GM. I hate him so much! - Marwood

Remember when we first thought it was Mazanec for Miller Cap relief?
or Mazanec and a 3rd?
or when we thought the conditional 1st was a joke?
The good ole days.

Look at the Hayes deal . Fletcher and the Flyers gave up a first round pick and a young prospect drafted in the first round to pay Hayes 7 mil for 7 years. They helped Winnipeg with their cap issues and gave them a first.
Benning does something similar but a lesser extent and receives 3 times the flack.
I still need to see the final team this year and how much of an improvement .

Yes I know. But if they both are lottery picks, then they'll get a 2021 lottery. Just saying it's a big gamble for a team so far out of playoff contention.
enough of me beating a dead horse.

The problem is some people, Benning included, truly believe this team is better than it is, right now.
Granted they are getting there (By fluke & mistake mostly) but mortgaging the future before you are a playoff team is f*cking retarded. |

I thought the Hayes deal was brutal, but don’t care two poops about the Flyers, so I have no rage there.
As I said, I like Miller, he is an upgrade to the top 9 forward group. His acquisition will force Benning to dump one of the bubble guys. |

If we don’t make the playoffs by 2021 then we need to trade Elias and start over. I’m dead serious. At that point, we can trade miller for a 3rd and a 1st as his contract will likely be a steal |

That is the problem. If we were a playoff team looking to get the team over that threshold to make us go deep in the playoffs yeah you make this deal grudgingly at the deadline. What you don't do is what Benning did mortgaging the future to show off at the draft with the slim hope of making the playoffs.
The saddest part is he truly believes this is a smart play. |

Yeah just because there are two other reputable GMs that made worse deals in the same week doesn't make Bennings better.
I am trying to look at the bigger picture
Will he be an improvement?
Will he bring back a good return at the end of his contract?
Is he cost effecient?
Like I said I don't like the trade but I need to see it play out. |
