Pronman on 2019 draft from the Athletic

Vancouver Canucks: B-plus
I’m a fan of the Canucks’ weekend (at the draft, aside from trading next year’s first-round pick). I think Vasili Podkolzin is a first-line forward and a player who will become a favorite of fans, teammates and coaches. I think Nils Hoglander will be a second or third-line forward in the NHL. Nobody else will for sure play, but Ethan Keppen, Karel Plasek, Jack Malone, Carson Focht and Arvid Costmar all are NHL prospects with reasonable chances to play games in the league. They helped their system a lot this weekend.

Flyers traded a first?
- Pacificgem

2 mid round firsts for Brayden Schenn who at the time was a 55 point player Flyers got.

Yeah, I don't think putting Van in cap troubles in the answer.
- manvanfan

There wouldn’t be any cap trouble. That plan has $ off coming off the books at intervals which coincide with valuable RFAs needing extensions. Obviously requires burying Loui and trading Sutter. Both doable IMO.

If it's the 31st pick?
- manvanfan

The 31st pick is a first round pick and we’re not winning the cup in the next two years

Flyers did the same thing days earlier only worse. That is the cost of getting a top 6
- VANTEL

Do you mean the 5th round pick they gave up? Or the $7.5m in salary?

Colorado Avalanche: A
I liked a lot of what Colorado did this weekend. Bowen Byram for me is a projected No. 1 defenseman, and Alex Newhook could be a really good top-six forward. Those are two huge pieces, particulaly Byram. I’m higher on Alex Beaucage than a lot of NHL scouts. His skating is a massive concern, but I love so much about his game that I do think they could get an NHL player with that third-round pick. I also think Drew Hellson and Trent Miner have a puncher’s chance to play, and their other picks have non-zero shots. The Matthew Steinburg pick was high for me, even though he has some NHL attributes. Overall I thought they injected a ton into their system and remain on a steep upward trajectory as an organization.

But the condition is what year they receive it, not if they get one or not.

Trading away 1st during a rebuild always stings a little for a fan base craving high draft picks.

- bloatedmosquito

For sure I get it's fairly steep to pay for a top 6 winger but Miller is worth it.

UFA Dman will probably be next.

Months ago I said this was probably going to happen to get the team closer to the PO's for the 50th season. So I'm not shocked at all they went out and got immediate help for Petey, Boeser and Bo and now it will be a dman. It was all expected on my end so I'm not freaking out about it like most lol

Detroit Red Wings: B
Detroit had an interesting draft. They got talent. The debate over the next few years is did they get the right talent. I like Moritz Seider a lot, just not at No. 6. I like Antti Tuomisto, just not at No. 35. For what it’s worth, Detroit wasn’t the only team high on both those players, even if it wasn’t a consensus opinion. They had a lot of day two picks, as has been the case the past few years, and they added a lot to their farm system. I think Seider will be a quality top-four defenseman, Robert Mastrosimone and Albin Grewe play, Tuomisto has a good chance to play, and several other picks are on the radar. For the assets they had, was it enough, though? I have some skepticism, but time will tell. This is one of the most fascinating team classes of the past few years.

Minnesota Wild: B
I love Matthew Boldy at 12th-overall. I think he could be a top line forward in the NHL due to his elite skill and hockey sense. There was no Day 2 pick by Minnesota I hated, but none that I loved either. Vladislav Firstov, Hunter Jones, Adam Beckman, Matvei Guskov and Marshall Warren are all fine prospects. I think they all have chances to be NHL players. I know some scouts who think Firstov and Jones will definetly play, but I’m not as confident. The Wild system was thin coming into the weekend, and I thought they helped move themselves in the right direction.

San Jose Sharks: C
The Sharks didn’t have many picks and none until No. 48, but I thought they got some talent. I think Dillon Hamaliuk will be an NHL player, and all the Russians they picked either have a chance or a good chance to make their team one day. It’s not a lot, which is to be expected for their draft slots, but I think they got talent at all their picks, even if Artemi Kniazev was high for me at No. 48. I know several teams who liked him a lot, so I will pay close attention to him next season to see if I was off at all.

Team just needs to rid themselves of Sutter, Virtanen, Schaller and Eriksson money so they can still sign Leivo and Hutton and Boeser and Panarin

Did you see what it cost Toronto to get rid of a bad contract?

Vegas Golden Knights: B
Peyton Krebs, at No. 17, is a huge piece for Vegas’ future, even with his injury in mind, as he is projected to be a very good second or a fringy first-line center for the team down the line. Pavel Dorofeyev is a big debate. A lot of public lists had him high, but a lot of teams I talked to through the year didn’t like the way he plays. I think he could play, maybe as a sheltered third line/power play weapon type. Kaedan Korczak at No. 41 was high for me, but I’m lower on him than a lot of scouts I talked to. I do think Korczak, Layton Ahac, Ryder Donovan (who was also a player subject to massive debate all season among scouts), Isaiah Saviile and Marcus Kallionkeli are all NHL prospects to some degree.

I agree. The cost is always high during these trading windows.

I just hope they are as close to being playoff competitive as they think they are.

I thought over the next two seasons is when you start assessing what you got and then go for it, especially considering this years 1st pick is two years away. We need this pick to contribute.

What team do you think will eat 6 mil in cap space for Loui?

I thought those 5 did the best. SJ did the best with what they had.

Horrible undecided on Vancouver thanks to drafting 19 year olds and the two USHL players that were completely unknown to me. Maybe one turns out to be the next GAudette and Plasek turns out to be Ondrej Kase.

Didn't bring the same excitement I think we have had in the past couple drafts but could still surprise. Judd Brackett seemed very excited.

I don’t understand the comparisons between Hayes and Miller? Flyers gave up a 5th rounder but paid more in salary while Vancouver gave up a 1st & 3rd round but got a better contract. Both teams got a top six forward.

Things need to happen.

I don't give a rats ass about Benning and his security for the next couple of years but I do care about progress of the team. If we can finish higher than 12 th next year then again to me it is a success.

The PP needs to change
The D needs to change
Canucks need to get rid of borderline NHL players
The top players need to have a good year again.

Sutter is 2yr serviceable 3LC for someone at not the worst $ ever. Someone could take that and send us a 5th in return. I’d bury Loui in Utica personally. Eating $18mil isn’t a big deal when it puts you in a position to make much much more than that.

Edit: Loui was frontloaded so we’d be eating $13mil, not $18mil.
