Both reported numbers on Johnsson and Kapanen are good. Easy to trade either player if required. A few people up in arms about giving up a first rounder to get rid of the Marleau deal, but look at it this way. Without doing any research, how many times is the 20th pick a Gauthier and how many times is it a Pastrnak? My guess would be 17 out of 20 Gauthier.

Yeah it's rare. After the top 5 the draft gets pretty random. The Leafs are trying to win, this is exactly time when you ditch a few picks. They kept all their firsts since the Kessel deal and now here they are, they can spend some draft capital now.

hyman is worth 5x5.5 if johnsson is 3.5mln aav and nylander 6.9mln

Yeah it's rare. After the top 5 the draft gets pretty random. The Leafs are trying to win, this is exactly time when you ditch a few picks. They kept all their firsts since the Kessel deal and now here they are, they can spend some draft capital now.

the issue isn't trading the 1st . the issue is what it was spent on.

It's available to any team that has a a player going to arbitration.

isnt it a steal when the player actually becomes a star on the nhl? hard to steal from people who chose not to take said item and instead left it on the shelf for someone else to take.

Ya we do, another pretty solid draft by Timmins and co. Gonna be some epic games between the Habs and Leafs in the forthcoming future once the likes of Suzuki, Poehling, Brook, Fleury, Ylonen, Romanov, Caufield, Oloffson, Evans make the NHL jump

Theres always a choice. See Tampa getting a first while shedding salary.

I actually like this year's picks better than last years and the year before for the leafs. Minus sandin of course.

I'm not great at math but does this not mean Marner gets less?

it goes off by cap percentages.

I know it doesn't help the Leafs as a team but it doesn't help Marner.
