Leafs needed the cap space. With the cap not being as high it means teams consider it more valuable.

In addition, what isnt spoken about is the fact many teams were looking to unload contracts. (Lucic, James neal, Eriksson in Vancouver...among others) and far less teams willing to take them. Cap space is a premium this year sadly.
