Why would they? Someone laughed at the idea of us ever being there in the next 2 years? Our D suck at the moment, I’m glad he did. - Garnie

You mean the same way people are saying Dubas could have signed Matthews and Marner last summer, when in reality it was reported very early in the summer that they would not sign before the season. I think it was Mackenzie and I think Dubas even commented on it. - Aetherial
The agent was quoted last summer saying they were open to signing a deal prior to season, but not once the season started.
Dubas is quoted as saying he was in no hurry to sign the 3 kids last summer.

The agent also said he would not talk contract during the season due to it being a distraction. Then he commented on Matthews' deal.. |

I'm gonna take things to a positive tip. The Leafs - reportedly - have Kap and Johnsson signed to reasonable deals. So Kap was a return from the Kessel deal who turned into a player. Better than if he turned out to suck. Johnsson was a Leafs 7th round pick who turned into a player. That's a good result.
Both guys look like they could be solid 2nd tier guys on good deals that were developed from within, although Kap was acquired via trade. They're not aging UFAs brought in after their peak. Good work by the Laffs.

31 out of 31 teams would have protected that pick. |

Leafs offer was 10.5mln on 8 year your dumbwhit.
10.5mln on 5y is more interesting to MArner than 10.5mln over 8y. - MaximusAurelius
who is in a position to offer him 10.5M over 5 years? and who is going to offer him a $12M signing bonus on july 1 and chance to play with tavares?
side note: it would be funny if the canes tried to get marner to put ink to paper now that they have 5 firsts in the next 4 years. though crazy with aho to sign and no goalie. |

Hearing that William Karlsson’s extension, once signed this week, will be 8-year max term, which was really important to him. Loves it in Vegas.

The reports are that the argument is more about term than money. Ferris is a lousy agent and Marner is his prized account. The only other star he represents is Taylor Hall, for whom he got $6 million a year - same a RNH - not very good work. - winsix
I honestly don't think I've ever seen't a worse agent. He's so far out of touch. |

No poop contracts on the Leafs at all. Zaitsev's is somewhat like a turd but not total poop.

Exactly.....we used to give up 1sts to bring in aging vets for a playoff run in a non-cap environment.
Now we are giving up firsts to fill crucial D and retain our drafted young core in a cap environment.
Our farm team is good, and we have more depth than we've had in years...giving up a couple of firsts to steady the path along the way is a good thing.

Good question. Absolutely no team on the rise is parting with 4 first rounders. And he isn't signing with a bottom feeder. And of those teams on the rise, most don't have jewels like 34 and 91 either. |

Would love to hear the leafs reaching out to panarin’s camp.
Then tell marners camp that we can’t halt our teams plans on one player. Tell him they might not match the offer sheet if he gets one. Try and scare him a bit. |

We should not confuse the player (misinformed as he may be) with his idiot agent.

At the end of the day it’s up to him where he wants to play. I want him to stay but the leafs can’t afford him at 11 million.
I don’t actually mind the fact that he is looking at offers from other teams. It’s a win win. |

thinking about this a bit more, it is not very likely any GM in league is offering Marner an offersheet, just to facilitate him to get a 10.5mln/5y deal by leafs.
the only real way for an offersheet would be to offer him 13-14mln on a one year deal, with the understanding that a 11.5mln AAV/ 8y deal will be offered by the team in Jan/Feb 2020 for Marner to sign.
NYR are in a position to make a 13-14mln 1y offer - in particular if they indeed trade a few of their other players (Vesey and Kreider rumoured to be gone).
No way Leafs are matching a 14mln 1y deal. |
