as it is now next season is a write off. so they will have what, 4 years with matthews on board? tiny little window for a cup win. dunno, im not that optimistic right now lol. the league shifting towards rfa's getting huge deals could not have come at a pooptier time for the leafs. pretty much (frank)ed over their shot at winning anything. - daeth
Blowing a first for Marleau's 1 yr was all about next year. Dubas doesn't think it's a write off |

You understand how LTIR works, right?
Plus they can be 10% over the cap through the summer... - lumlums
It seems that you don't (Most leaf fans don't know how LTIR works on here).
You can exceed 10% over the cap through the summer, but you must be under or at cap by the 1st day of the season. This is why the Blackhawks had to dump the Hossa contract a few years ago. |

I completely disagree, there is zero reasons for me to believe next season is a write off.
Every good team has good RFA's...
This is a classic Leaf fan post The Leafs cleared some much needed salary to help them win. That is all. - Santo_44
No, that is not all.
You do know that giving up a first is a downside right?
You aren't smarter than everyone here, or anyone, for that matter, so stop with the attitude.

The price to dump Marleau for 1 year is a 1st round pick. That's ridiculous, but necessary due to the current cap restraints.
I do find it funny though. People on here were claiming that they would get a return for Marleau. I guess they didn't realize that the return was a 6th round pick
All joking aside. Leafs now have 14M in cap space. Enough to sign Marner + some lower line players. Now they need to move the Horton contract so that they can sign Kap + Johnsson and then they can ice a team that is slightly worst than last year. - RedRevenge
Lmao, that is false.

I don't see that.
Every other top RFA in the league is not signed right now.
Its a process. It's just a classic Leaf fan thing to do to expect failure before anything is even done. It is June 22nd... - Santo_44
well they had no reason to assume otherwise so it's hard to fault them. they are no doubt scrambling right now though and having to waste assets to dump a guy with 1 year left on his deal is the result. |

If Dubas can get rid of Zaitsev and get everyone else signed, today was a good Leafy day.

If you are going to troll, at least get your facts straight. Every Leafs fan knew it would cost something to unload Marleau's contract. |

nothing to do with ltir.
ltir can be used starting from summer.
rest of roster needs to be under cap at start season. |

Lou shouldn't of gave him the 3rd year.
Dubas is just cleaning up a mess he knew he had to deal with eventually. |

So you risk not having money to sign Marner and important depth players, in order to keep an overaged bum?

The Goat, Stuart Percy, Tyler Biggs....
gotta love those safe picks. - Santo_44
Right. And any picks coming back in trading kap or Johnsson or from an offer sheet is still just a chance.
Bird in the hand worth two in the Bush. Muzzin is guaranteed in the line up and Marleau is guaranteed out.
Sucks it cost so much but that's the price to fix a mistake |

It's unfortunate but buying him out was still too much for the leafs and because it's a 35+ contract retirement isnt a choice either. |

If Marner, Kap, and Johnsson come in at 15 Milly and Zaitsev can be traded then they've got about 6-7 Milly to spend on two D'men. |

Mitch Marner’s agent Darren Ferris is slated to leave the draft shortly en route to catch a flight home. Ferris and Leafs GM Kyle Dubas did not meet this week in Vancouver. Obviously lots of time both both sides to connect in Toronto this week.

wait a minute.
the 6million he now compensates could have almost been completely covered earlier by signing marner to 8mln and matthews to 10mln contracts earlier. - MaximusAurelius
Marner wasn't signing 8m ever. Or do youbforget his dad's rant? They were always going to July 1st. |

Dubas sure does love his smaller defenseman, or players in general.
Kokkonen 5'11 but a fairly stocky 200lbs. |
