On to the business: VAN will get hit with a cap recapture penalty of slightly more than $3M in each of the next three seasons. FLA cap recapture penalty will be slightly more than $1M in each of next three seasons.

If the bulk of the rumors are true, Panarin will go to Florida, Duchene to Nashville. After that the UFA forward talent drops to Pavelski who is 34. Outside of Panarin and Duchene a GM would have to be insane to hand out a long term deal to any of the remaining UFA forwards. I'd agree with Gorton, two year max on any of the rest. - smellmyfinger
In an alternate world, Shea Weber just retired. They wouldn't even be able to afford Mcleod if that happened |

There's still 6 years left on that contract and it was the original Kovy contract so there's still a good chance Nashville pays bigly for that one.
That was a $110 mil contract that pays $1m each season for the last 3 years, wow would that be a big recapture. |

they have other ways of making cap room though, they could get rid of a few of the guys that are pending UFA's rather easily I think (Nam, Vesey, Strome) and they could go 10% over the cap until opening night
I say sign Panarin, then worry about it all later - jimbro83
I agree with all your words, including in wanting Panarin here myself. But Gorton's words yesterday in now only wanting to pursue free agents for up to a two year term, is likely due to being unable to first trade, Shatty and Smith, followed secondarily by Namestnikov and Vesey. I had not seen teams rumored interested in Strome, nor him rumored to be dealt yet, (in being mainly a center), possibly because they may have been waiting to see if Hughes was the one they would have landed with the #2 pick.
Despite J.D. on board, they could have suddenly felt that Panarin is first destined now to land in Florida. |

Last year, if you tried to buy it out one year had a 36 million penalty

Maybe he already knows Panarin isn't signing here so he's looking elsewhere. - Fenrir
I agree, and mentioned last night that they may have some fear & uncertainty as to whether Panarin has the Rangers as his option one preferred landing spot. |

Panarin might still sign here, but I think we all agree if Gorton never even considered a plan B, that would be a fireable offense |

Roberto Luongo is indeed retiring with three years remaining on his contract, as opposed to going on LTIR. There will be cap recapture penalties for both #FlaPanthers and #canucks as a result. - jimbro83
Hank for 2 years, we retain 3 million then they have Knight |

The Panthers just fell short of the postseason due to their less than worthy goal tending after the All Star break. With this word as to Luongo retiring early, should they not sign a goalie via free agency, (Lehner, Mrazek, Varlamov, or Mike Smith among the top pending UFA goalies directly below Bobrovsky), or deal for another one, they may decide against earlier rumors of parting ways with Reimer for now. Most certainly, they will be in even greater heavily on Bobrovsky.
The Panthers may also possibly attempt to trade two forwards in Hoffman ($5,187,500) and Dadonov ($4M), with each having one year remaining on their contracts, after first needing to have them agree to waive their NTC or NMC clauses. That would free up even more money not only for Bobrovsky, but also to land Panarin, in having a current cap hit of slightly over $61M for this upcoming season, but $13.5M lower for the following 2020/21 season, and lowering thereafter. |

Rangers need to get Dadonov right now if they are shopping him

Yea I don’t get it either. Unless he signed for 3 years but that’s unlikely. And he’ll get a NMC |

The rumors before the draft sure, but since the draft they’ve added Knight. I don’t see them wanting to commit long term not knowing how long it will take Knight to be ready. |

I am not aware of the Panthers shopping either Dadonov or Hoffman. I originally mentioned the thought here last night in regards to the Panarin talk, that if you suddenly see the Panthers offering either or both of those two in a trade(s), it would be for purposes to fit in both Bobrovsky and Panarin in their otherwise current $61M cap for 2019/20. Their only other potential 2020 free agent earning close to Dadovov's $4M for this upcoming season is defenseman Mark Pysyk at $2,733,333 (in being UFA eligible next summer). |
